for some reason my oil is burning and i dont know why. my motor doesn't have any leaks the exhaust doesn't have any visible smoke coming out.. what could it be... if it matters i use royal purple? 1 more question. the stock oil gauge, i dont really understand it.. does it read pressure cause when i i drive regular the needles sits on the low side. but when i rip on it the needle goes up past the normal mark and on to the high side a bit. is that normal or is there a problem... im new to the dsm world so you have to have patients with me... im coming from hondas to eclipses... LOL

On oil usage (doesn't matter which brand..), you could have valve seals that are weak and letting oil seep past the valve stems. It won't be noticable (unless you let it idle for a while then rev the motor up when you take off from a stop sign..) while driving. Course, it all depends on your definition of oil buring - how much is consumed..

Others can chime in on that gauge question.

Yep, big changes from the Honda World to the DSM World - Welcome aboard!

Ok firts off our DSM are known to burn oil so thats normal, up to a certain point ofcourse. if you are using full synthetic oil dnt be alarmed cus thats how that oil works its suppose to burn little by little but sum ppl dnt know and think that they have a problem when they really dnt (all oil burns but synthetic burns faster). about the pressure gauge if your driving normal you are not putting that much boost or pressure on you engine thats why the needle doesnt go that high and the oil aint circulating around your engine as fast as it does when you floor it

Thats not accurate synthetic oils have a higher burn off point, I usually run my car about a half quart over to account for the oil in the turbo, And i think the 4g63 has problems with the oil gauge

What do you base this on?? Ive never heard of oil burning off in a healthy car, A higher burn-off point means it wont burn off or evaporate until it hits a higher temp if what your saying is true everyone would have to add oil all the time which would negate all reasons for using synthetic oil.

correct me if im wrong but most ppl preffer synthetic oil just because its way better than no synthetic, and just because synthetic oil is suppose to last longer doesnt necessarily mean that you have to leave it longer, it all depends on how much you love your engine, go ahead and leave your car without an oil change for 15,000 like sum synthetic oil companies advertise it, then check your dipstick and let me know if its still going to read full.

This is not true^^^^^^^^^

Any healthy motor doesn't burn oil, yes some may go though some in a 5000 mile duration, but burning oil being normal, NO.

As for synthetics burning faster,,, no.

ok ima let you guys answer your own question just do your oil change run it for the recomended mileage, and then check your dipstick reading. like i said oil burning is normal up to a certain point(do you guys even bother to check your oil level in between oil changes?) and also dnt forget your driving habits, the harder you drive the faster your oil is going to deteriorate.

No need to argue everbody has differant point of views... But I did the oil chang about 1500 miles ago an I filt it to the second notch on the dipstick... I checked it an it burnt down to the 1st notch... But I figure it's probably a Lil higher since the turbo needs oil too... So my question is has anyone else experienced this issue?

Once in a blue moon but I'm thinking that is the rest of the seafoam clearing out I used in the car when I did the oil change...

Course, turbo motors have less bearing clearance than do the NT's why it's been preached many-a-times not to use thin oils - nothing less than 10w/xx oils.

Course, how many miles driven after the change to were the oil level is now at the 2nd notch on the stick?

Also, when you wind that motor up above 4Krpms under power and boost, oil consumption is going to be used due to the increased oil pressure, piston speed and other factors when the motor is under load. .. it's just a normal thing with piston engines when they go under load.

I'd still say that valve guides are getting tired if you see smoke on occcasion... Also, is the motor original, or has gone through a rebuild? If original, a lot of factors then set into play: tired oil rings, valve seals, et.al. ... for slight increase of oil usage.
