So my car has been getting a new engine due to throwing a rod, I got a new short block, then rebuilt it and there was rod knock. I got a new crank and bearings and installed those. Now theres no knock, but the oil pressure is low. It was 25lbs cold, and 15lbs warm. The mechanic is saying now that he took apart the oil pump, and saw there was a spring that was messed up. He figured thats what was causing the low oil pressure, so he ordered an oil pump rebuild kit, and says thats going to fix the problem. Does this sound right? This has been a 3 month long process so far, and im getting ready to throw in the towel, so any help or advice would be great. Thanks

More info needed please...

Dod you do a BSE?
Port the OFH?

What is the pressure at 3000 RPM warm?

Did you ask where he is getting the rebuild kit from?

3 months for an oil pump rebuild and install is a bit of time.

When you spun a bearing, and r4eplaced the crank and bearings, did you have the big end of the rods checked and resized as needed?

The crank was polished, machined, sized etc. Its been there for 3 months because I bought a new short block with internals etc, reused my head after I got it milled, machined, new valves etc. We got it running 2 weeks ago, and there was a rod knock again, got another crank, and got it polished, sized, new bearings etc. I did do BSE, and he did go back and make sure everything was plugged correctly, and it is. Next he went and checked the oil pump and said there was a bad spring. So he ordered the rebuild kit from his people, and its supposed to be in today. He thinks that should be the cure to the problem. Just to clarify, it was at 25lbs cold and 15lbs when it was warm. Im claiming stupid on what the OFH is, so please tell me what that is. Im guessing it hasnt been done though because I dont know what it is.

Most rebuilds with BSE report a much higher oil pressure.
Who did the BSE? Are you sure the bearings were flipped?

On the crank, once polished, was it cleaned well? With a gun brush through the oil galleys of the crank?

Most often there is still grit from the crank being polished, if not cleaned and just installed, soon as oil flows thu the crank it pushes the grit right into the rod bearings.

Also did you have the big end of the rods checked?

There is no spring in a 6 bolt oil pump. It is a case with 2 gears, that's about it. Sounds like the balance shaft bearings weren't rotated in the block.

Bryan.. are you sure there is not a bypass valve spring in the oil pump?

Are you sure that 15 pounds is normal? If so i dont know what the deal is,he was thinking it was too low

Im not sure if he is just using my factory gauge but im guessing not if he is giving an exact reading.I dont know for sure,he is saying there is a little rattle after it warms up that he doesnt like as well. This rattle is new to me so who knows until i can actually talk to him later.Im so done with this whole thing honestly, its been going on for 2 monthes now.If it is a knock after all of this that motor is going straight to the junk yard.
