have a question about my oil pump? how do i know if my oil pump has gone bad? does it make a grinding sound, i was told that it does sometime.. but im not sure.
I have video of this sound so if someone wants to host let me know

Thanks, Anthony

I don't know of any good way to test it, short of installing an oil pressure gauge to show you how much pressure it is sending. The noise could be anything. You could also just take off the front case and inspect the oil pump for damage, which is what I would do I. If you have a high mileage car, it is a good idea to replace the front case altogether.

If you can get a hold of a logger set up for your car like maybe one of your friends has one then you could just run a test and try and pull some codes. That is what i would do. Data loggers come in handy if your not running link :thumb:

If you lose oil pressure, you will notice two things. First, the oil pressure gauge goes to zero. Secondly you will hear a lot of rattling as the lifters will lose prime. If you are experiencing this, then you probably lost the oil pump. You can simply remove the oil pressure sender near the front of the engine next to the oil filter and replace it with a manual gauge which is readily available at any parts store. I trust manual gauges over electric gauges. Especially if I get a weird reading.

Don't drive or run the engine as you will be slowly destroying it if you have indeed lost the pump.

Do the manual test and post your findings and we can go from there.

Good Luck

I thought my oil pump was going but it looks like you have a completely different issue.

Would the oil pump going be the reason why I build oil pressure but it doesn't go down?

You probably have too much crankcase pressure caused by a bad PCV valve. Does your dipstick pop out on its own?

No it doesn't, and the PCV Valve is brand new, I just installed it the other day. It has maybe seen 5 minutes of idling thus far.

damn this thread is old.. LOL

oil pressure and crank case pressure are not really related what so ever.

ghosted- do you have balance shafts? what grade oil are you running?

I do have balance shafts, I am running 5w30 as I just put the top end back on.

After about 85-90% heat and after 2 minutes the oil pressure does drop again, but rises very quickly again to 80% when the gas is pressed for any amount of time.

The car just sounds funny. I have attached a video so you can see better what I mean.

wow I didn't realize how old this thread was, guess its better then starting a new one. At least I'm not worried about thread jacking now

Tightened up belts, sounds a little better. But what Im worried about is that tick tick tick tick tick tick.

Im not sure if that would be from lifters??? Ive never diagnosed a lifter issue before.

The replacement head the I got had all new components except the valve cover, which I had anyways

Indeed. There is a post on the forum of different kinds of ticks. Rods, lifters, valves, bearings and other stuff. Use a hollow pipe or a long screw driver and carefully probe around with your ear on one end. Try to pin point the noise. Maybe a lifter is dry. You said you got the head fully assembled? Maybe it sat for a while and the lifter/s are exhausted. I would (If you can.) Pull the lifters and soak them in oil. They have to be primed in some cases. You probably have a lifter that was compressed for a long period of time and doesn't want to cooperate.

You could also pull the fuel pump relay, Pull the plugs and valve cover and have someone turn the engine over while you watch the rockers for vibration.

That sounds like a perfect diagnosis to me, it would make perfect sense.

I assume that pulling the lifters isn't as intensive of a job as the head install I just did, so I feel pretty confidant to go at it.
Ive found an excellent article here on how to do it, only had a chance to skim over it but I think this is tommorows project, hopefully oooh hopefully this will work. If anyones got any tips on this now is the time!!

good theory 92AWDTalonTSI but it still doesnt explain variable oil pressure readings. I agree though, pull the VC off and pull the wires and plugs to see if you have a stuck lifter.

EDIT: BTW, whats the hose that's stuffed with the rag in the middle doin?

sounds like your exhaust manifold is loose and the gasket is vibrating. I had the same problem after I installed new headers and found that I did not tighten them all the way.

Doubt this....its not a exhaust leak sound.:nono:

Does sound like lifter tick. When removing my head one time, i had 3 stuck lifters. I guess they go bad quite often. They normally get clogged and can cause the valve to not open. But it doesnt seem to misfire at all... correct me if im wrong??

Also something to think about is that when you put the timing belt on, you could have put on the balance shaft and or oil pump backwards timing. Does the motor shake more than usual?? There are people that have put the pump out of phase and had bad oil pressure due to that. Bad oil pressure = lifter tick.

Its so hard for me to tell if I have more vibration then normal, I haven't driven the car in years now!

I had an issue with misfire when I had my Brand New NGK 8.5mm plugs go bad, so I have a good idea what a misfire sounds like and it doesn't sound like that..

Im not sure about the oil pump being backwards, I was really really careful when I put the timing on (triple checked, then triple checked again just to be sure) so unless I got information wrong (which i doubt) then it should be on fine

i just checked my exhaust mani bolts and they seem to be on fine, great tip though!

How many km's should I drive it before I expect the tick to go away, i only ask becuase I dont have insurance AND the car obviously needs a paint job before its road worthy. (i have a body kit, Yes I know I will loose at least 30 horsepower since i removed the spoiler, but I hope to gain it back with my awesome fenders!)

***The long thing sticking out with the rag attached is my BOV dump tube, I would just rather have a rag sticking out of there for the time being then a rag right beside my turbo where it can be sucked in*** (dont look too much into it)

I don't have different vibrations at all, it remains constant thought the entire rpm range (it does growl like a beast when I rev it though)

It sounds like it could be a rocker or lifter ticking away. try snapping the throttle open in neutral from idle to about 4500rpm and then keep hitting the gas in an on/off manner to keep it at 4500ish for 5-7 seconds. then shut the car off for a few mins and repeat the process a few times. if the noise goes away then comes back you have a bad lifter.

i wouldn't totally rule out an exhaust leak..
does the wastegate flapper fully seal against the hotside of the turbo?

i know its not recommended in the FSM but if i can get away with 15w-40 in the summer with an average temp of 70-85F then im sure you could get away with 10w-30 in the summer with temps on average from 0-40F.
it couldn't hurt to try..

Yeah, next time I do the oil Ill make sure to put something a bit thicker in here. I know this is Canada but we live in a Semi-Desert so it gets up to about 103 F in the summertime here.
