I'm wondering what the distance is supposed to be between the oil pickup tube and the pan.

This is on a 6 bolt engine.

I have a dented oil pan and I'm trying to bang it back into place. I don't have another pan to look at in order to get it back to original place.

I've gotten the pan back to what I think is normal and I put some clay on the pickup tube and set the pan on it. The tightest clearance is right at .200 and the biggest clearance is .500.

Anybody know where its supposed to be at?

Thanks,

~Bob

I set the clearance to .250 on about 15% of it, and around .400 on 85% of the pickup tube to pan clearance.

Here is a pic of how it ended up.

This should be fine as I read a topic earlier that Kiggly posted in. He said on his car he ran the clearance right around 4mm-5mm(around .200 max) This is on a car that pulls 1.3x 60 foots so his clearance is tight to keep the pickup from sucking up air.

I would say the pick up at the screen point is about 3/8 inch from the pan

I wish I knew for sure, but I think with me being at .400 max I will be fine.

Loss of oil pressure as the pickup can not suck the oil in fast enough. The rest is history. LOL

Ah- no. Unless the entire elephant's foot is crushed hard against the pan, your oil pickup won't be affected. Even then, it wouldn't seal well enough to keep the pump from "sucking the oil in fast enough".

He did say his screen is touching the pan, so I assumed that the pan was fully crushed into it. That would bring up a problem.

Well, the screen is touching the pan, but my oil pressure is still high. I had to port the oil pressure relief three times because it's so high.

Right now I JUST started my car from another stock rebuild (spun a rod bearing). I'm waiting for it to cool down so I could change the oil. No problems yet, but my oil pressure gauge is showing high oil pressure at idle (around 40psi). It may because of the fresh start, but I'm going to check the wiring.

The screen isn't flat, it's rounded so if the screen touches the pan it can still suck up oil from around the edges.

It's common for the oil pan to have some dents in it. I like to pound out the dents with a hammer and a punch or something. It'll add a little oil capacity and give the oil pickup extran room just in case you bash it into another rock on the road or something.

If you take care of your car and don't run over stupid shit you will not have dented oil pans. ROFL

Your right, the 1g 6bolt pick up is rounded but its not protruded like the 1g 7bolt. If the pan was touching the center of the screen there would be very little clearance on the sides.

Got ya. LOL. I ran over a cat in my stock height civic the other month....felt so bad.

But I have a buddy that is buying a stock style replacement oil pan from Autozone and I'm going to clay the pickup tube to oil pan to find out stock clearance. I'll report back when I get the data. I'm curious to see how far off the bottom of the pan the tube is.
