All the seals, Oil cap, sparkplug well seal and valve cover seal are all relitivly cheap and can be changed in a short amount of time. Troble shoot. Do the oil cap first.. if it goes away, good to go. If not , change the spark plug well gaskets. If your gonna do them, you may as well throw in a new valve cover seal.

my valve cover gasket kit was 55 dollars and a&a has them..not cheap but very easy to do..:)

Check to make sure you didn't tighten down a bolt into the cover too much causing it to crack, i had that problem. If thats the case take the cover off and put some jb weld on both sides of the crack and let it sit for an hour and fixed.

:dsm: Hey guys, i got a problem can any one help me, I just bought a injen cai for my 420a (97 gs), i came home and put it on and ran the car to see how it ran. At 1st it was awesome i could tell and hear the difference, but when i got home i parked the car and it went down to 200 rpms, it ran like that for a couple of minutes then it died. I went back with the stock air intake and i still had the problem. I checked all the hoses to see if i accidentally disconnected one and they are all in place.... I started checking my spark plugs and i discovered that i had oil in the second one, can anyone tell me what this can be due to or what i should check to pin down the point... i cant get to Auto Zone to have the codes pulled because the car starts and dies right away, i need your wisdom to get my baby back on the road, or is my last resort going to satan??? please help i hate going to them.....:dsm:

I had oil in 2 of my spark plug wells... check and make sure your valve cover is not cracked and if it's not it's the spark plug well gaskets, you would need to be a valve cover gasket which comes with the spark plug well gaskets, no big deal for that, but that would probably not be why the car was dieing, if you only have oil in one spark plug well your car should not die even if the wire got messed up it would just run like shit, if your check engine light comes on I would have satan a.k.a. the dealer look up the codes for you.

Did you keep checking the other plugs after you found the one with oil? Try the key dance to see if you can get the code that way. Once you have the code you will know where to start. I doubt that one bad plug or wire would cause the car to die, so there has to be something else. Your car will limp on 3 cilinders for a little while. For now try getting all the oil out with a paper towell and the sockett and once you have most of it out pull the plug and replace it. (if you have another vehicle to go to the store in) Check all the wires for damage, or oil, then go from there.

if you have oil on your spark plugs, chances are that your piston rings are shot.. remember, on a piston, there are 3 sets of seals, the top 2 are compression rings to keep air/fuel away from the oil on the bottom..
the bottom ring, the third is the oil ring which keeps oil rising to the top where the air/fuel mixture is..

another problem could be tapered cylinders, can be the problem to this whole thing... tapered cylinders happen when the rings expand throughout the top part of the cylinder making it like a cone shape thing allowing oil to hit the combustion chamber at top dead center

pull valve cover off take out spark plug gaskets on valve cover, clean them, then apply rtv on them, put some arround the valve cover gasket also when you reinstall. this will last long enough till you can afford a gasket kit, on a marine's pay.

ah...how does any of this bass ackwards info pertain to oil being OUTSIDE of the cylinders INSIDE the spark plug wells...

oh yeah...as to how to fix the problem, replace your valve cover gasket set:thumb:

hmmm, i thought about it and it could be the valve cover gasket plus all the other stuff i said..

I had the same problem. It was the gaskets. Make sure you didn't strip any of the valve cover bolts. If you over torque them, the gasket won't seal right and you might break the thread. I did on one of mine. It sucked.

so i go to change the plug wires and i find the lil pudle of oil under the cover, so how do i tell if its a crack in the valve cover or if its the gasket?, i will repace the gasket im sure, but hwo do i tell ne way, and kinda a newbee question whats WOT?

thanx

jott

it could be a cracked valve cover. the oil cap gasket could be leaking, it has something to do with the valve cover or gaskets around it.

WOT = wide open throttle. 100% throttle. the throttle plate is open as far as it can go allowing the max of air to enter the intake manifold.

Use your eyes... Clean off all oil from everywhere and drive around for a while. Then check to see what is crapped up with oil again, and where the trail leads back to. Frequently it's just the oil filler cap leaking.
Let us know!!

Here's a statement from Magnecor that deals with our DSMs:

Apparently, using their wires in our cars VOIDS the warranty because of said oil leak problem. As far as I know all if not most of the Eclipses have this problem. My previous RS had the 420a and the valve cover/oil cap leaked like crazy. Now, my GSX with the 4G63 is starting to show symptoms as well.

I have basically the same car. I had the same thing happen. I replaced the gaskets then my car started making a taking noise. Some how I bent a valve. I am in the middle of taking the head off. It sucks. Good luck

I had the same problem but the oil was on the #4 plug. I had to change my valve cover gasket and the spark plug tube seals. It works like a champ. But you have to change both the valve cover and the tube seals or you will leak oil like a civ!

It's near impossible to bend a valve just by replacing the Valve Cover Gasket. I say "near" impossible because everything's possible, but this is very unlikely. ;)

You may have just gotten some grime or something in one of your Lash Adjusters during the gasket install and that would cause the ticking.

that is excactly right... what this guy said... because the same problem happen to me last summer... and i was smokin like crazy... i was then misfiring a cylynder after that wek... if u start to see smoke... time to do piston rings... new head gasket .. new plugz and wirez...

if the oil is in the 4th cyl which happen to mine.. its deff that prob ...
