oil on spark plugs [Merged 11-7] oily wire wires cover valley well wells

my car has approx. 52k miles on it, it's a 98 RS and i discovered while lI was changing my spark plugs that my stock, used plug in my #1 cylinder was coated with oil. I changed them, along with the wires, then changed my oil, and kind-of wrote it off since i sometimes drip a little of my mobil 1 around that area while refilling. A couple days later, i check the new plugs, just incase i would have the same oil problem i had a couple days earlier. YEP . . . there's oil all of my plug. I think it might be a seal, but I want to get a second, third, or fourth opinion on it before I go someplace and ask them to take my whole head off and charge me an arm and leg for the labor. Anyones reply would be greatly appreciated. thank you

-What part of the plug is the oil on? on the thread? most likely the valve cover rubber seal(set) need to be replaced. on the electrode? most likely valve stem seal(s) or piston ring(s) , do a leak down test in this case to pin point the problem.

when i pull out the spark plug, the oil is all over the threads and where the spark is produced. Thank you so much for your thoughts and suggestions kevin. They will really help me and my ride out of this mess.:thumb:

the little seals between the valve cover and the head are old and brittle. When you change the valve cover, you should get these too, and the little half round piece as well.

I had this, and it got so full of oil in there that it would misfire under load!!

Scared me when it happened, as I only bought it 2 or 3 days before :)

It could also be that your oil cap is leaking under high pressure and the oil flows under the spark plug cover where it would end up in that well. That's what keeps happening with me. I just bought a new cap a couple months ago too. oh well.:(

how could the oil from the cap leak up over the lip that the spark plug boot goes on? The valley in the middle of the cam cover would have to be filled with oil for it to leak into the plug wells. Not saying it couldnt happen but you would have to have ALOT of oil all over the place.

But it could be cracked for sure.

And the person who did the valve cover gasket could have over torqued the bolts last time, and wrecked the gaskets, allowing oil to pass them. It is supposed to be like 2-3 lbs/ft, hardly past finger tight.

That's actually what happened to me.....One day I went to change the oil, and the cap was in pieces.....oil all over the place.

holy craap Seth, good thing you didnt drive any more!! Down 2 liters of oil would be bad under WOT

You're telling me! Yea I'm pretty sure I found out about it right when the oil cap cracked.

This may seem like kind of a weird question but I'm wondering if anybody else has ever had this problem before. When we put in my 16G a couple of weeks ago, as I was filling up the oil I didn't have a funnel handy (dumb I know) and I ended up spilling some oil which eventually made it's way into my spark plug wells. Not alot, but enough to cause a misfire. Also my Magnacores are getting pretty old which doesn't help. Now I have cleaned most of the oil out but there is a little bit around the rim of the spark plug hole itself when you pull out the sparkplug. I want to clean it out but at the same time, the only way is with the spark plug out and I don't want any of that shit going down into my cylinder. Does anybody know something that I'd be able to use to cover the hole while cleaning around it? A small towel. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. I know this sounds rather bizarre.:dsm:

I went to change my plugs today and two of my plug wells were half filled with oil! Since i'm going to be replacing the motor anyway i pulled the plugs and let the oil seep down into the cylinders. After i put the new plugs in and started it up it ran rough for 30 seconds and then ran fine. I ordered a valve cover gasket set today to fix this latest problem!
Hope this helps

Got oil in the cylinders of the spark plugs? That sux. Get a rag and dab it in fuel system cleaner. Fuel system cleaner like the Chevron w/Techron or whatever is just a cleaner to clean grime and gunk in the fuel system. Theoriotically, using this in the spark plug cyclinders should be safe since fuel system cleaner goes through the intake manifold anyway-just don't spray it in there. May the force be with you. :thumb:

Long flathead screwdriver...rags...does the trick.

so i noticed that in my 4 cap for my plugs there is oil laying in and around it, the other 3 are fine, but what exactly do i have to replace? is it very serious? where can i get the part i need? etc etc, thanks.

i have the same problem. i believe it is because my oil filler cap leaks, allowing oil to run down onto the valve cover. the leak is a common dsm problem and an easy fix
