Pick up a new valve cover gasket. It will come with the little grommets that seal the spark plug wells to the valve cover. That is were your leak is coming from unless it is cracked, but they dont just crack on there own. It usaully happens when you are tightening the VC down. So be careful it doesnt have to be very tight.Check out my avatar. That is a elantra VC:)

haha love the elantra VC. ya im gonna change the gasket its a little worn out. and i just took a look and i see a somewhat hair line crack in the corner of it.

Just be very cautious to not over torque the screws but if there is oil by the spark plugs it could be a possible leak and the gasket needs to be replace.

ya i might have tq'ed it down to much i deserve a kick in the nuts haha jk :beatentodeath:

Don't feel bad. I have that elantra VC because i over torqued my factory one, and cracked it.:pSometimes we learn the hard way:D

Double check your oil cap - I put a new one on and still had a problem.

Is there oil in your spark plug wells? - could be the round seals there.

Does your dip-stick pop off? - I made a dip-stick locking thing to keep oil from spraying all over the engine bay (my rings are fine -fyi).

Double check your pvc is installed/working properly - pressure builds and can cause oil to be pushed up.

ya i just got a new oil cap again haha, the round seals are bad but no oil in the spark plug holes. dipstick is good. and im gonna have to check the pcv that might be it. is there a way to test my self if the pcv is working right

thanx for the help

When you do change the valve cover gasket it's a good time to do a valve cover paint project if you ever thought about it before!

The pcv valve is a check valve. You should be able to blow threw it one direction, but not the other. It is also a common boost leak when they go bad

same thing happened to me wit oil piling up in the spark plug area and it was cracked so i ahve my money on that and i have a catch can on my car

breather and PCV ports. my guess id you need a new valve cover gasket.

Ok, I know I have another thread open, but this is a whole new problem. Starting to get scared of dsms already.

Anyways, I take the car out for a drive today and notice that there is oil smoke coming out of the car. I cuss under my breath and get out to see that at idle there is white smoking coming out of the exhaust. So I drive it home (at this point i was maybe a half mile from my house).

When I open up the engine bay I notice there is oil setting on top the valvecover like around the spark plugs holes and the lettering. This is what I don't get. How is it getting up there and if its on the outside of the engine, why is there white smoke coming out of the exhaust. I don't see any wet spots on the engine except on top of the valvecover and around the water pump which I already knew was leaking.

Some notes about this short drive: I didn't go over 3000 rpms at all and I ran the air conditioning for the second time since I've owned the car.

I need to figure this out before I go spend money to get a waterpump and alternator on an engine that could potentially be screwed. Note that the compression is really good on all cylinders (170ish). Please help with this, I'm already feeling like selling the car and I haven't even owned it a week.

Spark plug hole gaskets - did you replace them and put rtv on it when you put the valve cover back on?

[Do not use RTV on the valve cover gaskets, other than on the corners of the half-moon plugs.]

Oh wow, i notice this in the wrong forum now. Sorry I'm out of it at the moment from a big lack of sleep this week (less than 5 hours every day). If the mods could move it to the newbie section that would be great.

No I haven't ever taken the valvecover off and I haven't ever replaced the spark plug hole gaskets.

You are saying that oil is on the top of the valve cover where the letters are, i dont think its comming out of your spark plug area of you valve cover, check around your cam sprockets and look for oil. Your seals may be leaking and getting flung on your belts.

I would take off your valve cover and check it for cracks. I made the mistake of over-tightening my original valve cover bolts and ended up cracking the valve cover near the spark plugs. I ended up leaking oil where the spark plugs are so I needed to replace my valve cover.

Do some closer inspection to see if you can see where the oil is coming from. You should be able to get some idea. In addition to the things mentioned above, I would especially check the oil cap gasket. If there is any possibility that it is leaking, get a new one. They run about $2 from the dealership. MD311638 is the part number for 2g oil cap gasket.
