So i was doing just a general check over everything. I pulled off the uicp and lots of oil. I'm thinking turbo is leaking pretty bad. This is my first dsm. I am wondering if i should rebuild the turbo or buy a new one. I am a fairly addapt mechanic so i would be able to do the rebuild myself. Any input would be great. Also as a side note my buget is not huge but not super tight either. Thanks in advance for any help.

your turbo seal is shot. you have the same problem as mine but mine is not bad at all. also its not really a good thing to drive it if you have lots of oil in the uicp because it will clog up. im just waiting for my t25 i got off ebay to come in.

Well there isn't that much oil in the uicp. My question now would be to do a rebuild or to just buy a new one. If so what turbo would be a good one to buy?

I highly doubt your Turbo is bad...

Just do what is in the link that defiant posted and your problem is solved.

Also you should clean out your intercooler because there will be lots of oil in it also.

I thought oil in your intercooler pipes and intercooler were from years of blown oil coming come the valve cover.

Yeah, its normal if you dont have a catch can. Clean it out, especially the intercooler, and itll help it flow better if anything. then get a catch can. :)

Yes, that is what it's from. And if you build a catch can, like in Defiant's link above, then it will stop the oil from continuting to coat the IC pipes.

Also, 99% of the time, when a turbo's seals blow, it will pump so much oil into the motor, that it will cause a James Bond style smoke-screen behind you.

Yes, that smoke screen can be fun, with my old '85 EXP turbo, I could build it up by decelerating in gear, then stomp the gas and big puff of smoke. Lots of fun for tailgaters.

curious on how does a catch can stop oil from going into the intercooler pipe and intercooler

Its the same principle as adding an air filter to the intake. It acts as a screen and catches anything thicker then air. Since oil is obviously heavier/thicker then air its going to catch it and allow mostly air to pass through. :thumb: :talon:

the issue is i had one of those james bond type smoke screens but it was only while i was idiling. Then one day it went away for the most part. I took it to mitsu and the guy told my my map sensor was broke. i then asked to look at it and it was reading all funky especially if he tapped it it would drop to 0 then jump to 30. I was told that was most likely that was what was making it smoke. so i replaced it for a cool $200 (s.o.b. there goes buying anything else for the a couple of weeks LOL) anywho it doesn't smoke now at least i don't think it does i haven't seen any. So maybe i should not worry about the turbo or should i have it looked at anyway? Cause i know how a turbo works and everything but i'm not sure where the seals are and how to tell if they are the culprit.

EDIT: however catch can here i come!!

your engine is suffering of blowby which means your pistons rings are going bad, do a compression check. At least that's what happened to me I tought it was the turbo but it was brand new so I decided on opening the engine and my rings were gone. Good luck on finding the problem though :thumb:

Smoke at idle is a totally different thing. Thats usually some internally within the engine (ei. piston rings, valve seals, etc.). Smoke screen while boosting usually means the turbo is blown. Lots of oil in the IC pipes usually confirms this. But the oil in you pipes is simply cause from the lack of an oil catch can. If you're not smoking at full boost, then your turbo should be fine. :dsm:

mine always do it when I let off of full boost, ie shift or decell...

IT jsut lets me know it is time to throw antoher free t25 on it

If your exhaust isn't smoking then like everyone else said, it's oil blow by from the crank case. If you're smoking especially under boost then it's most likely the turbo seal. How much oil are we talking about anyway?

Well i'm not smoking at full boost at all. I also dop not get smoke when i decel so maybe my turbo is good. It does however have shaftplay not much though hopefully it will be cool till i save up more money. The tech at mitsu told me it was smoking because of that map sensor. It really is not that much oil. Thinking about it if no one took it apart in the 136k miles it would have just about that much oil in the pipes. So i'm thinking if i just clean out all the pipes and intercoller and then install a catch can i should be good. For that problem at least. :dsm:

edit: can i have a free t25
