Oil Filter Spacer? [Merged 10-8] sandwich plate

exactly like i said, you cannot physically remove the stock oil cooler because its built into the oil filter housing, you also state it yourself above. and what i said about looping the lines, so if you say i am wrong, so are you :p

the purpose of people getting air to air is to step away from the water cooled unit. it tends to get damaged leading to coolant mixing with the oil. so keeping the coolant lines running to it even a sandwich to get an air to air, defeats the purpose..

people who inquire about the sandwich are 7bolt owners because our only option for an oil filter housing with the air/air ports are the EVO one and they cost $150 I believe, definitely not worth it enough for most people to switch. So sandwich is a means to have a cheap alternative.

No, you CAN remove the stock cooler from the filter housing. That pic shows it removed from the housing. What I said was that the sandwich from Glowshift came with too long of a bolt to just use the sandwich (like it should be) to use the air cooler.

if the 90 oil filter housing worked with 7 bolts, believe me this thread wouldn't be made..

If only it was that easy :p

You can see the sandwich I used in the pic.

Here you can see what I'm talking about. If you could get the bolt they include with the kit (white) shortened then you'd be able to run without the stock cooler on there.

Edit: I actually have that backwards after thinking about it. The white bolt actually holds onto the stock cooler and the sandwich is held on by the shorter one.

How does the sandwich stay on there, just threads in?
Anyone know what thread/pitch or whatever I would need for this sandwich?

No there is a nut that is threaded part inside and part outside. If you look at TSG59 diagram you would the see the white threaded part. The part that threads to the old oil filter thread and a lip to old the sandwhich adapter and a new thread for the oil filter. I got mine from prosport gauges.

Anyone have pics of theirs on a 7bolt? I'm looking for either a sandwich plate and removing the stock cooler or looking at a n/t housing if that will work. I need a pic of one though.

It looks pretty much identical to the one I posted. Are you looking for a particular angle or something?

Nope, just trying to keep my options open and see what will work the best and for the least amount. I'm broke :(

I changed to an external oil cooler setup using a sandwich plate but in the end it ended up being much more expensive than it just getting the mitsu filter housing with the ports. I did it on a 6-bolt swap (although a 7-bolt could be done the same) to try and save the effort of removing all the belts and pulleys and timing cover, but looking back it would have been easier to do all that.

It is possible to remove the factory oil-water cooler and bolt the sandwich plate onto the filter housing but you need to do a few mods. All sandwich plates I've seen are designed to bolt on top of the cooler and as a result the mounting bolt they include has female threads. To bolt up to the filter housing you need male threads but the factory bolt is too long to use with the samdwich plate.

So the solution:
1. Cut off the long side of the hollow factory mounting bolt with the male threads (the side that goes to the filter housing).
2. Get a peice of steel tube of a diameter to fit well inside the hollow bolt suppliedwith your kit and cut it to half the length the female side of that bolt (usually about 3/8 inch).
3. Insert the steel tube into the new bolt.
4. Screw the cut section of the factory bolt into the new bolt (use some thread lock).
You now have bolt that is the correct length and has the correct threaded parts to attach the sandwich plate directly to the oil filter housing.

Getting back to the cost though. The problem with sandwich plates is they have no thermostat, the factory mitsu part does. So I ended up using an earls thermostat inline and a bunch of -10AN fittings and hose.
Total cost:
Mishimoto Cooler Kit (sandwich plate and external cooler) $210.00
Earls Thermostat $110.00
AN fittings and hose $140.00

So for a 6-bolt or 7-bolt just get the factory filter housing with the built in ports and thermostat.

Where can you purchase the earls therostat? And How did you end up paying $140 in hose and fitting? I'm going push loc so it's cheaper.

Instead of cutting the bolt, can't I find a bolt that will work?

You can get the Earls thermostat from anybody that sells Earls products (Summit Racing, etc.). The part number is 501ERL.

The fittings I used are:
4 pcs -10 O-Ring Boss (on thermostat)
2 pcs -10 90degree (on sandwich plate to thermostat)
2 pcs -10 150degree (on thermostat to sandwich plate)
4 feet -10 braided stainless hose
It's amazing how fast all that adds up! I purchased the thermostat and fittings locally which is a little more expensive than online but much more convenient.

As far as the bolt, it needs to be hollow and a fine thread pitch. Very difficult combination to find. My solution took some thinking up front but its really easy to do if you have a dremel and a pipe cutter.

Edit: The thermostat also has three 1/8 NPT ports so you'll need three NPT port plugs if you don't install any sensors.
Come to think of it, I probably spent more than $140 on fittings and hose.
