Oil filter Cooling fin mechanism??

A while back I was looking through the JCWhitney catalog and noticed something kind of neat. It was a little mechanism that you clamp around your oil filter that has fins sticking out all the way around in order to dissapate the heat off your filter and help cool the oil. Sounds like a decent theory because air cooled engines do the same thing and it wasnt too pricey. I was just wondering if anyone has tried this at all or had thoughts on this. I ran a search but nothing on this came up. Thanks.

It won't do any harm, but it won't do much good. If you want to attach something on a filter, a magnet makes a (very) little more sense.
If you want to cool your oil, install an oil cooler.

I know what you are talking about. They actually get quite hot so they are not worthless. The basic principle is sound as the aluminum fins are very effective at extracting heat but I don't think there is enough surface area to make a significant difference. But as Defiant said, it won't harm anything.

Yea thats the theory I was going by but I was just wondering if anyone out there had tried it but it doesnt sound like they have. Maybe I'll pick one up for when I pull my car out in the summer and give it a try. An oil cooler would be best but with my nt it may take some work and ingenuity but maybe later down the road when I have some free time.
