oil filter coming off

my oil filter is coming off every time i boost really hard. it broke today driving to dallas the son of a bi*** incaved on me and i ended up doing an oil change (luckily i had a filter in my car) on the highway but i doubt that will be the last time it does that. what will cause that problem?

This is wierd I was at work tonight and someone said I was leaking oil I was like yeah I know it always leaks a little.I go look at it and was like wtf!I had a huge puddle I reached under and my oil filter magicly unscrewed itself?I did the oil change I know for a fact it was on there thight...Maybe not tight enough.Is that what yours did?

hell the #### ya it did. i tightened the balls off that thing and i was runnin this 240sx on the highway and then smoked my car up with burnt oil and pulled over and looked and my filter was coming off.... i tried tightening it back on and then started the car... reved the motor and then oil shot everywhere from the filter. i pulled the filter off then looked at it real good and the filter was partially encaved.

Yeah thats wierd...I think you meant to say you were at the track running a 240.....Dont talk about street racing on here.Dsmtuners does not condone that so if you do it dont talk about it.Is this the 1st time this has happened?

no its been happening gradually actually. at first i just thought it was a bad filter or the wrong size or something? but now i dont really think that is what it is

This should help I just found it use the search.The part that the filter threads on to was loose last time I changed the filter so I'm sure thats the problem with mine.

what kind of filter are you running? make sure an old gasket didnt stick to the housing.

Like sag just said, make sure you're running a quality oil filter not some $2.50 piece of junk.

Also, if you didn't remove the old gasket from the last filter, it won't properly seal and possibly back the filter off the housing.

This happened to me on my old Saab, left the old filter's gasket on there by accident when I was rushing an oil filter, hit boost, oil pressure dropped like a rock. Moral of the story, don't rush simple things cause they can end up being costly.

If its neither of those two things, whats your oil pressure currently at? I suppose a high level of oil pressure might be able to slowly loosen the filter eventually.

the part ware the filter screws onto comes loose, this happend to me i just got the right socket tightend it up and never had a problem again

Correct, the part that the filter actually screws on is what is coming loose, we were tuning when we found this out b/c oil pres just dropped outta no where. So i tightened back up with the appropriate socket, and we did some more pulls a few days later and same problem happened.

We unscrewed that part all the way, i put on red threadlock, tightened it back up, and no problems since at all! including multiple tunes, and 5 or so passes down the 1/4

I had a similar problem. Turned out that the filter housing was coming loose.
