Abbotsford,
Hey guys,

I have a 91 Talon TSI AWD and the oil filter has backed off twice. Only over night, and it is on the last thread!! I can't see any reason for this, if I check it when I park it, it is tight, but in the morning there is a HUGE puddle underneath and the filter is almost gone. Could this just be some one playing a cruel joke on me?? I do live in an apartment in Abbotsford..... if you live here you wouldn't be suprised if someone was stupid enough to do this. It just doesn't make any sense.

Thanks
James

Oh got my tranny back in, and watch out, 2 connectors look exactly the same, it'll go into limp mode...... I just about cried!

Some one is defenitly messing with you car, the filter is only supposed to be torqued as tight as you can turn it by hand, and shouldn't back off. If I was you I'd get an air rifile and watch my car for a couple of nights, and when I saw the bastard messing with it give him a good shot in the rear end, or in his hackey sack and that should put an end to it.

Ya, I've never had that problem before!! There has been someone here messing around with cars, nothing major, just annoying things like that (a few other cars in our building have had the same problem, from what I found out today). So not a big deal, once we shoot him :) I just wanted to make sure it's not one of those freakin DSM things, it would suck to loose the filter on the freeway or something ! :)

Thanks

James, with the oil to water oil cooler you have on the '91, there are sometimes problems with the stud that the oil filter screws onto. You need to get a 24mm deep well socket, a can of brake cleaner spray and some red loctite. Remove the stud and clean both it and the threads it screws into with the brake clean, apply the red loctite, reassemble and torque it tight. Allow it to sit for several hours before refilling the motor with oil. Don't mess around here or it could cost you your motor.
Easy fix.

Some one is defenetly screwing with his car if the oil filter is backing off the stud, not the stud out of the housing. I've owned 3 1g dsm and have never had my oil filter come loose. Even in Germany when they were deliberatly trying to sabotage our car because they objected to the war I never saw that. Good thing no one gave them any ideas though.

Germans are weird. They are principals in the two biggest wars ever and then get religion.
If I were king, they'd all have to drink a big glass of S.T.F.U.

No ones messing with your car.

Your watercooler seal is going bad. When they dry up the bolt gets loose and then when it gets loose the filter can back away from the cooler housing.

If not on the last thread, its just loose.

Buy a new seal and torque it to spec and I bet your problems go away. I've had this happen a couple times myself. One time so bad I hosed my engine compartment with oil.

He already said that some one was messing with cars in his parking lot, but it just so happens his water cooler seals are going bad? Sounds kind of fishy to me. I put nearly 50k on my 92 turbo talon before I sold it and never touched the water cooler seals. I'm not saying it dosenst happen but given the above quote doesen't it sound kind of weird?

I've driven DSM cars since some of you guys were watching Sesame Street (litterally) and I've obsered this:
1) You never have a problem
2) You can't keep the oil filter from backing off.

At the cost of a motor, I'd spend $10.00 on loctite'ing the stud in place because #2 will wreck your week.

Wow I was watching sesame street in 94 when I got my first DSM, no way didn't know 16 year olds watched that, I must have been pretted F'up at the time. But seriously never had that problem ever, in a little over 10 years of owning these wreched machines.

The seal is what keeps the filter bolt from backing out.

When its tight there is enough pressure on the water cooler and bolt to keep it from moving. when it gets old, it starts to shrink and cooler becomes loose and in turn the bolt backs out making the filter come loose and it backs off.

You dont need to locktite it. Just get a new seal and torque it to spec. Will be good for another 12~15 years if you do it right.

We just went threw this with a 91 water cooled style engine. Why do you think so many people change to air oil coolers and 90 style filter housings? This issue is one of the main reasons.

A DSM at 16? You have a nice Mom!

The deal is, the seal is elastic and acts somewhat like a lock washer by puting a small thrust load on the stud. Heat and ozone turn it to poop. Loctite is 100% but so is the '90 filter housing.
A '90 filter housing and a Setrab cooler is the shit, so to speak.

Try a job at a farm since I was 13, which was well past working age by my parents standards.Mommy and daddy didn't give me chit I worked for everything I got. And got the scars and calaous's to prove it.

That sounds totally realistic to me just never had anything like that happen to me. It just sounded like someone was messing with his car since he said the same thing happened to other cars in his parking lot.

Not trying to jack the thread but I have a 99' and the same thing has happened to me twice in like a span of a month or more, not overnight. It sounds though as if only 91's had this issue which has got me confused on what has happened to my car? For the record I'm like 99.9% positive noone is messing with my car. I just one day will notice a puddle of oil under my car. Lay down, notice I can spin the filter really freely, tighten it back up, check the oil and cross my fingers it stays on for another month or so (not a good way to go about things if I plan on keeping my car around for a few more years). Anyone have any idea what my problem is?

The guy who started the thread said the same thing was happening to othercars in his parking lot that is the only reason I said it sounded like somone was messing with his car. As for you, this guy said it best:

Either that or you just need to but some more azz on your filter, and make sure the old oil filter gasket is removed and its not double gasketed when installing it.

91+ had/has the issue. Anything 91+ has the water cooler. Only 90's didnt.

Well very good then. That's good money for a kid on a farm! My first DSM was a '91 that I bought used in '93 for $11,500.00
