I'm going awd next week. I picked up a big parts lot and while going through it I found the oem flywheel that was included. It's definitely the same with the exception of the starter teeth missing. Are the teeth pressed onto the oem flywheels?

Hey and welcome to the club!

Yes, the teeth (ring gear) is pressed onto the DSM flywheels. That is where the difference comes between AWD/FWD flywheels (and of course 6/7 bolts).

EDIT: Gave wrong link/info. Please refer to 19Eclipse90's reply and link!

I'll just refer you to this topic where it is nicely explained what the differences are, but in short, all 4G63 flywheels are the same (body wise) but the ring gear itself has a smaller diameter and less teeth on the AWD one, the FWD ring gear is bigger in diameter and has 106 teeth.

Thanks for the link. I knew the 2 were different because of the teeth me and buddies just never realized that the teeth were actually pressed onto the flywheel. Has anyone ever had one pressed off to be pressed onto a new flywheel?

I have not personally done it but when I had a flywheel restepped i had the machine shop swap a good ring gear in it and it didn't cost me anything extra...

I had one good flywheel with a bad ring gear and a bad flywheel with a good ring rear so I brought the machinist both and he fixed me up...

Sorry, but I'm not sold here. The link you are referencing is referring to Fidanza aftermarket flywheels. Here's one that says otherwise for OEM flywheels: RRE's Clutch and Flywheel Tech Info. This is also supported by the fact that a 6-bolt FWD turbo flywheel without the ring gear has a different OEM part number than the 6-bolt AWD flywheel without the ring gear. Same for the 7-bolt.

Edit: I realize that link doesn't really say whether or not one could use a FWD turbo ring gear on an AWD flywheel or vice-versa, as would be relevant to the topic of this thread. All it says is that the 1G AWD flywheel has an additional ring of cast steel towards the OD of the flywheel's non-friction side compared to the FWD turbo. That would explain the different part numbers without telling us much about the interchangeable ring gears. So I measured a FWD turbo 6-bolt, FWD turbo 7-bolt, and AWD 6-bolt flywheel from tip of the ring gear teeth to the ID of the ring gear (or OD of the flywheel where the ring gear would press on). In each case, that dimension remained the same at 12mm which confirms that FWD turbo and AWD ring gears are not directly interchangeable.

Actually, you are very right. I should have searched for the link you posted as I remember reading into it as well. I will edit my original post as to not confuse anyone else!
