I know how everyone feels about obx but when I saw this I had to bring it up see what everyone thinks.

eBay Motors: OBX GT35R TBX35R T3 BALLBEARING TURBO 600HP NEW (item 370023481579 end time Feb-21-08 22:04:27 PST)

I am contimplating a turbo kit for the eclipse after I reach my goals with my nitrous setup but I don't want to just get some basic log and 20g or 16g setup and when I had my 4g63 the gt35r was going to be my next turbo as it's a beast and still hit's full boost resonably fast considering it's size do to being a dual ball bearing turbo. I know it's a lot bigger than most of the 420a guys are use to running but I'm not really looking to go with the crown with this car anyway. Key things that impressed me is the anti surge cover the built in restictor and a water jacket.

your wasting your time even posting this, OBX is junk. I wouldn't trust anything from them, let alone something that needs to be precise as a turbo.

It's never a waste of time to post. It's a new product and even though it's from obx doesn't mean it will be junk from jump street. People thought xs power made all junk too look how many people have their fmic now. But thanks for your input guys i just want to see what everyone thinks. Make valid points about the turbo and what could be wrong not just it's junk it's obx i'm open to all POV.

Those don't impress me much...

The anti-surge cover is nice, and necessary for a 0.63A/R turbine, but otherwise unecessary and easily found on other GT35R's.

Oil restrictors can be had for less than $20 from most outlets... not a big deal there either.

Almost all BB turbochargers have a "water jacket." Because they don't need much oil for lubrication, there isn't enough cool fluid running through them to prevent overheating. That's disingenuous of them to advertise a standard feature of all similar turbochargers as something extraordinary and unique.

Journal bearings are one thing, but BB turbos require incredibly high precision during manufacturing to function correctly. When I bought my 35R, I wanted Garrett or nothing for that same reason. Granted, Turbonetics or other established manufacturers would've been acceptable, but I would not trust a company that couldn't put enough R&D into a manifold to even clear a thermostat housing to assemble a piece of precision machinery.

Be sure they're accountable and they stick to their warranty policy. While Garrett turbo's don't have much of a warranty, at least they have a CHRA buy-back policy if you kill yours.

With today's prices, I would really spring for a genuine unit. You'll only have to shell out $350 more or so.

No offense meant, Paul, but this is the most important part of your post. As we have seen from other OBX products, we can make them do OK with some modification. But we are not talking about precision 100,000rpm balanced pieces WTF. At this level I would definitely be very wary of buying.

Now, if you are looking for a nice low, "ball bearing like" spool with the power of a 35r and a better curve, I would suggest the Borg Warners.

They don't spool as well as the gt35r does and it's not the fact that it has expensive parts which it doesn't it's the fact that they atleast took the time to incorporate parts found on units $350 more. $350 is how much total it will cost me to get a cage in my car so to me needless to say it's worth it to me to save that much. I went the expensive route with my last turbo on my tsi and it didn't impress me.(By the way it was a sbr gt14 65lbs/min)

Yeah a 1 year warranty is key too you figure if it's gonna gonna ago it with how I drive it won't take a year.

Sounds like everybody is putting them down but nobody really has any facts to back up what they are saying:rolleyes:.

That's a fair point, but OBX has given themselves such a bad reputation in terms of quality control, it's also fair to postulate that a product which requires extreme precision will not live up to its expectations. They've done nothing otherwise to lead us to believe that they've changed their ways. Like I said, just make sure they'll actually live up to their warranty, and then I guess you really don't have anything to lose.

I'd say give it a shot, but $750 is quite a bit of money to throw at an OBX product... Although, I've been running the e-bay (china-made) turbo for a while now at 16psi and everyone talks about how bad they are. I think i've been running it since Aug..? I forget. If you got the money, why not, then do a write up on how well you think it performs.

Yeah I want to see how far this nitrous setup alone will go than boost it too so it will be more fun on a daily basis but I would buy a portfueler if I boosted and a fmic and the whole 9 I wouldn't want to half ass it with anything so that way atleast I give the turbo a fair chance to shine cause if everything else is def stout and it goes it will def have been the turbo.

Sorry for bringing this back I know it is a few months old, but just wanted to restate people's guesses about this turbo may not be too far from the truth.

I know a few of you posted on this thread as well, but just connecting the fact that his turbo completely failed and luckily he said the engine didn't have any damage. But he was using the OBX tbx35r, with a nice build and MSnS controlling. Damn nice looking turbo too...

The warranty means nothing if it destroys your engine... I mean I guess you do get $750 back, but thats $1000's of dollars in damage if you're unlucky.

Yeah I gave up on obx pretty much. There is another brand I might give a chance though. CHeck out my other topics I started look for the one that says air research.

OBX is just Fake . you should go to real GARRETT gt35r if you really wants to get 500-650 HP .
the Garrett turbo worth peny of peny . i really feel it .

Ive been seeing advertisements for OBX turbo's in various popular tuner magazines. They can't be that bad. I'd be willing to try out there ball bearing 35r. Someone's gotta try one out right?

Category Name - OBX Racing Sports

They cost $800 according to that site. Why would you want to waste $800 when someone else, who had this exact turbo; just had it fall to pieces? For that much money you can go ahead and get a real gt35r, just buy used.

To his defense I have seen the OBX advertisment in about 3 different legit magz and just because one went belly up doesn't mean they all will and if they warranty his and he doesn't have a problem more the reason to trust them. But I found another company I feel more comfortable diming up money for.

Have you ever tried using the majority of OBX products? They put little to no R&D in; (420a turbo manifold, 420a intake manifold, their cam gears, etc.) All of those products come not fitting, not lining up properly, or missing necessary items for them to work; all brand new. If you want to chance $800 to be another guinea pig, by all means go ahead.
