Ok so i just bought a 92 eclipse gs for $900 bucks(here in fairbanks, ak dsm's are kinda hard to come by...). Anyway the car has sat for 2 years so the registration and I/M are expired, the only problem is it will not pass because the check engine light is on. I looked all around and only Napa had a OBD I tool for like $250.00 bucks. I was thinking i should be able to use a voltameter to get the codes right? Does the turn the car to on-off-on-off like 5 times in 5 secs work with these? Any help on how to get the codes would be nice. Also it takes like 20 cranks for the damn thing to start, first it will start for like 3 secs then die, then it will run but if i give it any gas before its warm it dies. But once it is warm she runs and drives fine? Thinking maybe o2 sensor or tps? my first thought was cts, it was shot but didn't fix the check engine light or hard cold starting. Anyway thanks for helping a new dsmer out and sorry about the page long details i just wanna drive it, not my damn 94 bonneville anymore....

Go to VFAQ and they have tons of advice on some of the common issues and start reading. As for the CEL codes, here's the link at VFAQ to get started.
