Well....I have been having problems with my 92 TSI AWD with 70k miles. For a week or so, the car smoked heavily from the exhaust...but then stopped...and ran fine. This past weekend I had the timing belt strip out on me (old owner didnt install it right), and it belt the exhaust valves.
Before all the mayhem happened...I ran a compression test to see about the smoking of my car. The compesssion was fine..something like 135, 140, 125, 150. Adding oil to each cylinder upped the compression a LITTLE...maybe like 10 max, but thats it. On a leakdown test, cyl 4 leaked a bit of oil from the oil cap....but the rest were fine, and each cyl was at 5%. My friend that did the test said everything checked out to be perfectly fine, and he said there is no way the piston rings could be bad (he's big on DSM's and turbo 4 cyl's). So my compression test turned out fine, and the leakdown test turned out fine...
What could be causing my problems? Could I still have a bad ring even though the leakdown shows its ok? I do have a problem with oil coming from my oil cap, and occasionally (rarely), the dipstick will pop up. Could those two just be bad? I know the gasket on the oil cap is hard as a rock, and the dipstick isnt much better. Could those be the problem?
