First off all I want to say that I SEARCHED FIRST, read basically ALL the treads pertaining to the fuel catch can mod, and I'm still unsure of the potential risks that the catch can poses to the a/f if any. What do you want from I used to on a n/a honda civic! Basically I'm going to be doing the exact same as shown at http://www.tgilmore.com/talon/catchcan.html were he just uses a $3-10 fuel filter. Will this work? Does it have to be a breathable filter? Will is hurt my performance/car at all? Thanks for bearing with me, I'm new!!!:coy:

Just follow the directions in the link you provided, and change the filter every 3 months or so. The filter is there to "catch" unwanted (and performance-hindering) oil buildup, aka "blow-by", that can store up in your intercooler piping and intercooler.

I'm not completely sure what you mean by "breathable" (although, I could probably guess). You do not want a filter that openly breaths into the engine compartment. You do not want an air breather that looks like this. If you go with this type of filter, you will end up with a very dirty engine bay, and this type of filter will tend to clog up much easier than the one in the link above. Just get a filter similar to the one in the link you provided. There really isn't too much thought that should go into this install. It is very simple. Please don't loose too much sleep over it. ;)

You're not going to "gain" any horsepower out of this modification. This is more of a preventative step that many of us take to keep our DSMs running at peak performance. :) BTW, this is not a 3-to-10 dollar filter. Go down to your local NAPA parts store and ask them to look up the part number that the author gives. It should be no more than 2-to-3 dollars. Nice and cheap, the way most of us like it. ;)

About a clogged valve cover air breather - air is supposed to escape out of this passage. When this becomes clogged, it can create nasty side effects. This is why you should go with a similar style air filter and change the filter every so often.

You can also follow this link or this link or this link or this link to clean out your SMIC of all the oil that has been building up over the years, and to add a mesh grill behind the intercooler.
