I am working a on a 90 FWD Turbo Eclipse. Right around when the turbo should start boosting instead the car just acts like it is getting fuel cut. The stock boost gauge went to the 14bar. I put a Faze Boost Gauge on and it reads that it isn't spooling at all. I checked the shaft play on the turbo there is none. But it is blowing black smoke out of the exhaust. I was thinking it was the turbo but now i'm just not sure.

Guys got any ideas of what is wrong?

Try checking for boost leaks. Also make sure that all your intercooler pipes are hooked up. When my intercooler pipes would blow off they car felt like it would be hitting fuel cut and blow black smoke because it wasn't getting enough air and with the pipe blown off, the car is still trying to run off the boost that wasn't coming through so the car would run really rich and blow black smoke. That is my opinion on what is wrong with your car. Check all your intercooler pipes and make sure they are hooked up and if that isn't the case try a boost leak test. Good luck bro.

I am about to pull the car into the garage and start working on it. So I'll let you guys know. Thanks for the help so far!
I was thinking the cat might be clogged. Might pop that off and see while i'm at it.

A friend of mine bought a 92 GSX that did the same exact thing.
Turned out his ECU had some leaking Caps, and some burnt traces.
Have a look see, it should smell like rotting seafood.

Have you done any work recently on your car? I'm 99% sure that's a boost leak; I had the exact same symptoms when I installed my intake and UICP. I went back in and tightened some clamps and whatnot, and it was all good.

Are you sure your aftermarket boost gauge is hooked up correctly?

Well. Pulled it into the garage started messing with it. Checked compression came up 140 across the board. Started dropping the transmisson to replace the clutch.

You said there's no shaft play, but does the wheel spin freely?

Pulled the turbo out. There is zero shaft play but it spins very freely. What does that mean? Anything I should continue to check for on the turbo? Really doesn't matter if the turbo is bad. Decided to also install a Big 16g Turbo on the car while the 14b is out.

Tomorrow, hopefully take the cat off and gut it. Finish dropping the transmission and take the clutch assembly out.

And build me a vaccum leak tester! Thanks for that link btw I see this tool coming in handy in the near future.
