Hey, I bought a 1996 Mitsubishi eclipse GST Spyder about 2 months ago. I got the car for 400$ and figured i could pull parts that i want from it to use on my other car and sell the rest to a pick and pull. I then figured why not attempt to fix the car and sell it as a running car. The car would crank over but not start. It was getting fuel, and spark. As i was cranking it over, i had noticed that the timing belt was very lose. So i completely redid the timing on the car and it now starts every once and a while. My question is the car starts sometimes, but sometimes does not. When it does start the car idles fine when it starts, and then if i give it some gas it starts to sputter at about 3000 rpms. What could be causing this?

The car is completely stock. Only thing aftermarket is the air filter. But ill check that! Thanks.

Check the MAF sensor too. sounds like as soon as you push the gas, the extra air is just killing it. Since you said your getting fuel and spark I would try this first myself

This sounds very fimiliar to what my 91 gst did turned out to be the ecu it would hardly rev and sputter at 3-3500k and started when it felt like it you may want to pull it apart and see if there is any leaky caps or burnt spots in it

i had the same exact problem with my 1g it was the timing tensioner
when it idles not alot of force on it but as soon as you give it gas the arm starts pushing the hydrolic tensioner in try replacing it

That post makes no sense whatsoever.

OP, was the timing off when you took the original timing belt off?

Also, check for boost/vacuum leaks. And make sure the maf is plugged in. It sounds to me like you are having an intake track issue. Also, coolant sensors will cause hard start issues, you may want to test them and see if they are good.

Yes, i bought the car not running and i redid the timing and the car ran. So yes the timing was off.
