Okay, I just bought my used 98 eclipse spyder gs. It has 82k miles on it and im getting my belts replaced because they are fairly old. How can I tell if my timing belt is okay, and how much does it cost to have a mechanic replace one?

Well not sure on price depends on where you have it done. But if you have the money I would definately get it replaced while the belts and everything are already off and things are exposed.

Check to see if the teeth are worn on the belt, or if theres any small cracks or anything visible on it, if there is replace it. When was it changed last? If you don't know when, and it still looks ok, change it anyways. Better safe than sorry.

Bingo :thumb: If you're still running balance shafts, be sure to replace the balance shaft belt too. It's been known to take the timing belt with it upon failure. Now is also a good time to replace the water pump while you're in there.

Note: 4g64's are non-interference motors, so if the timing belt snaps the valves will not come into contact with the piston. While it won't bend the valves or ding the pistons, it could still leave you stranded.

I'm not sure if the gs has the same timing belt tensioner that the 4g63 has but if it does make sure to change it. Regardless of belt health if your tensioner is bad, your belt is gonna go. I would try and get past records if possible. It's preventative maintenance. If you are doing your drive belts yourself just take the upper timing belt cover off and check for cracks..
