not starting porblem with fuel pump?

So I am having problems with my car not starting. My cars a 91 talon tsi awd. It will be good for a couple days to a week and start right up, but on random days it just cranks. We can't smell any fuel when it won't start and we testing everything electrical but the ecu.
On the days it won't start I spray starter fluid in it and it starts and I have to keep fethering the gas pedal, otherwise it just cuts off, for like 30 secs to a minute. I did a fuel pump wire a little over a year ago and haven't had any problems with it starting before. I am wondering whether anyone else had a problem with the fuel pump like this before? or if I am missing anything you guys think could be the problem?

turn your key to the on position and u should hear a little motor sound. if you dont hear it, then your fuel pumnp isnt running. you can do like i did and wire it to a switch to manually turn it on and off. it could be because of the cold. cold weather makes them not want to work. your relays may also be going bad. try the switch first takes a good 30 mins or less to do.

95gsttsi you are incorrect. Our fuel pumps do not prime when the key is turned to the "ON" position. Our fuel pumps only run when the key is in the start position, or the car is running.

Easy test:

Remove the fuel return line from the fuel pressure regulator. Bump the key and see if fuel comes out. If it does, do a fuel pressure test at that spot.

you said when it starts you have to lightly press gas down to keep it running then it maybe not be the pump

well for a while i thought it coud be the fuel pressure regulator but I would think it would still start good and then cut out, not when i'm trying to start that it doesn't seem to be getting any fuel.
