Hey Everyone,

Im new to the dsm world. Just picked up my First 1990 tsi turbo 5 speed manual. Anon runner. It came with 3 each: ecu's, MAF's and Throttle bodies. Iwas wondering which ones would have came stock with the car and which will talk to each other I need to know the correct combo in order to trouble shoot what else may be the issue to get this thing ripping!

Thanks

I personally would google the ECU part #s and see what came from what... i know that the 1st gen throttle bodies have a single electrical connection at the top if that helps... if there are sensors on the front that would be helpful to know as well. i know the 1g and 2g TPS are different. Whats wrong with the car?

It turns but no sign of even attempting to fire. Before I go spending money on replacement parts I want to get it configured properly with what I have.

I'm assuming they guy was trying to replace the ecu with an EPROM one and needed to switch everything else as well

Also tps= throttle position sensor?

yeah, thats correct about the TPS. If you are getting crank, are you getting spark and fuel? I would check out one of the no-start troubleshooting guides on here, and definitely agree about spending money on parts that are not needed.

Thanks. I will check on spark and fuel once it's charged up again. Until then I suppose I'll do some research. But if anyone has a running 1g turbo and could tell me the part numbers for the ecu, maf, and tps that would be super helpful

Your best bet is to diagnose what you have on the car already. If it cranks spray some starting fluid into the throttle body and if you are getting spark, it should start and run for a second or 2. If it does not fire, you have an issue getting spark and you need to check your plugs, wires, and coil pack. If it does, you have an issue getting fuel to the engine. Just go down the list of things in your fuel system. (Pump, Lines, Filter, Injectors, etc.)
I bought my 93 tsi awd not running and I ended up replacing the fuel pump, fuel filter, and spark plugs. Owning a DSM implies spending LOTS of money on parts. The sooner you realize that, the sooner you can get on the road. DSMs are a lot of fun if you put the time and effort into them, but they are a big investment.
Good Luck,
//Alex
