Been driving my dad's 2001 Dodge Dakota V6 Automatic while my DSM is down. Have a tranny problem I need help with.

Once the truck has warmed up, it'll come to a stop at a red light. When it goes green and I step on the gas the RPMs rise to about 2000 rpm and the truck struggles to crawl forward.

If I give it 100% throttle, same thing. Barely moves and RPMs are about 2000-2500.

I lay off the throttle and throw it into 1st. It engages and drives normally. Then 2nd then D and all is well.

My guess is that the tranny does not shift down from 3rd to 1st when coming to a stop so when I try to take off it's still in 3rd and struggling to pull.

Sound about right?

Anyone know how to fix this? Does is involve a complete tranny rebuild or can it be something simple like a shift solenoid or something?

Whenever there is a problem with a gear engaging or disengaging it is an internal transmission problem. Odds are it is a fluid pressure problem since you can manually shift it fine. It will need an internal rebuild of the transmission. Dodge has had problems with this for years.

Damn. Is there a short term patch I can do to help it out in the mean time while I'm putting my DSM back together?

Like heavier or lighter weight oil?
 
I used to fix dodge trannys all day... What your saying is from a stop it takes off slow, but when you throw it down into first it goes, correct?

If so, get the governor pressure sensor and transducer.... Remove the pan and the filter.... There should be like for bolts that hold in the little block and plate they are mounted to. It the only two visible sensors inside the trans that are visible. Can't miss them, can't mix them up.

Yes! It's like barely crawling. If I'm up a hill it wont even budge. When I throw it into 1st it engages and drives normally.

So the part I need is the Governor pressure sensor Correct?

Can you provide me more info / details? I know jack sh*t about automatics.

Ok, yes that is one of the sensors but change the pair. Theres another sensor right next to it.

this should be somewhat what your transmission looks like from underneath:

when you go to take off the pan bolts:

1. you'll need a big oil pan!

2. you'll notice the exhaust kind of covers access to some of the bolts. no worrys... take a pry bar and put it in between the pan/transmisson and the exhaust pipe and pry. this wont break the exhaust, but should bend enough to get cleaner access to the bolts. a swivel sockect will help. ohh, trans pan bolts are 13mm.

3. start removing bolts from the front of the transmission first, then work your waytaking one at a time from opposite sides. this will evenly loosen the pan so tranny fluid doesnt come rushing out all at once. as it starts to seperate, you can even pry down lightly on the pan to drain more fluid. eventually make your way to the last bolts which should be by the exhaust pipe.


Once you have the pan off you will see the filter and the valve body:

the filter is held on with two t20(or t25, cant remeber) torx bolts. take em out and filter comes down.


now theis photo only shows a portion of inside the pan, but its actually what you need:

its a just answer site, just scroll down a bit and you see what you need.

on the bottom of the pohto are two sensors labelled governor pressure sensor and governor pressure solenoid. that is what your replacing. if you look around the solenoid, you'll notice 4 bolts and two scerws. those 4 bolts should be an 11mm. take them out to remove that block, but you will get a small rush of more fluid so look out. once the block is off, disconnect the wires. then remove the 2 screws on the block, which should be a t25 torx. these hold down the plate that keep those two sensors from coming out.

replace and reverse the process!!

just a few side notes....
1. if the pan gasket is a formed, hard rubber gasket, its re-usable.

2. if your in there, you might as well spend the $10 on a new filter.

3. when filling it up, it will take about 6 or 7 quarts of atf+4, in nuetral WITH E-BRAKE ON, engine hot. but to start, throw in 5 quarts to start it up and add as neccessary.

Oh... Btw, leave the battery disconnected for 30 mins.... The trans ecu "learns" shift points and needed pressure based on your driving... They need to be reset after replacing those sensors.
