And if it's an oil pressure (to high) problem pushing oil past the seals in the turbo, that syrup could be "hiding" that untill it can no longer take the pressure. i would say change your oil and NOT put it back in(the syrup) and drive it a few days to see if it comes back which would tell you that it most likely is the rings.

While you're doing your compression test and leakdown test, check the turbo for shaft play.
