Wow. This is got me tripping a bit. I took the head off of my motor yesterday, and to my surprise, there's no head studs. I have ARP studs behind me on the floor for this motor, and my head was bolted down. There were the usual amount (10?) of bolts...but they were actual long bolts that screwed into the block. They were torque-bit styled also, which are similar to alan wrenches.

Why don't I have head studs? This is a stock motor, and I've seen several other pictures of 4g63 motors with head studs after head removal. This is odd.

That is normal ... the true "studs" you are referring to is the ARPs. These screw into the block and one the head is on then a nut gets put on from the top. The stockers are basically long bolts.

Yeah...I just thought that most motors came with studs stock...never realized they were an aftermarket choice. I was just lead to believe that on this motor. Interesting though, but at least I'll be replacing the bolts. I can see why you'd want to change to studs now that I've removed the head...

I hopefully don't plan on ever having to remove the head while the motor is in the car still. Right now it's down to just an empty block, and it's going to the machine shop this week.

cool good luck man. Be sure to double and tripple check everything once you get the block back. :thumb:
