Ask Me, Virginia
I have searched around for a bit, but I think this is just one of those things. My 1g is going to be my daily beater, but I'd like to replace my exhaust system from the stock 1g O2 housing all the way back. I'd like it to all be bolt on and hassle free.

My searches show all kinds of combinations and issues. Since this is just a daily and I want it to remain as close to stock as possible since, I'd like to know what I can just grab off of ebay and be done with it.

I don't have welding skills yet, so it must all be entirely bolt on. I'd also like to go as cheap as possible, but be absolutely sure everything bolts together.

I'd rather the downpipe take place of the cat as well to simplify things.

What can I do to make this happen with no welding AT ALL?

Car is a 93 TSI with a 6 bolt from a 91.

Thank you!

Please don't PM me trying to sell your exhaust...so annoying!

I would say the VRS kit would be your best bet. It's all made to fit together so it should just be bolton and go. You can find it on stm

Thanks. While VRS no doubt makes quality stuff, I wouldn't spend that much on my GVR4 so definitely would not want to spend it on a daily. (Not saying that either vehicle is better than the other...they just ended up with different roles).

I don't mind tacking a few brands together, ebay stuff is ok too. What I want to avoid is spending ~$500 on something and then having to bring it to a welder anyways.

That scenario seems all too common.

It has been awhile since i have seen o2 eliminator turboback exhausts. Back then the "downppe"section piece would bolt up to the turbine housing and stop at the cat and then the catback after that. It woul be easier to get a downpipe bolted to the 02 and buy a catback. You would have to check on ebay, if you would like to stay under 500 bucks.

Any of the eBay stuff should bolt together to be a complete exhaust. I have eBay down pipe and catback. I just bought the cheapest 3 inch ones I saw. They went together with my 02 housing and test pipe with no problems. The $150 catback even came with a reducer pipe for if you wanted to bolt it to a stock cat. I did have an eBay down pipe that I had to cut off the flange because it was clocked wrong but I think that was just a fluke. I'm sure I could have sent it back for a correct one but it was easier to just weld the flange on the correct way.

My latest exhaust is 2 1/2". I just found an exhaust shop and they cut and welded the pieces together and installed it for $180. Nothing fancy but the original exhaust lasted 15 years, this should be good for another 15.

I've never installed an eBay exhaust on any 1G or 2G which didn't require some sort of modification by the time it was all said and done- whether it be grinding / welding / stacking of gaskets, etc.

The last was a 2G FWD exhaust....the clocking was off on the flanges by as much as 30* at a couple locations. I slotted the holes a bit to the sides with a die grinder enough to gain adequate clearance and it worked. Before that was a 2G AWD exhaust....it was plumbed correctly, but one of the mounting tabs was on the wrong side of the exhaust so I had to cut it off and re-weld it to the other side.

I've gotten 2 of the straight 3" down pipes (neck down to 2.5" @ o2 housing) off of eBay and that were both perfect. Both ~$70 shipped to my door, each.

You will be hard pressed to find a down pipe to eliminate the cat. Most aftermarket "bolt on" test pipes or fake cats are 2.5" (necked down).

Honestly, your best bet is to buy a used bolt on system locally, and have a welder mate that DP to the rest properly. Cheapest/best option.

Well I had good experiences. Just bending hangers and such. I had the bad FP once that I mentioned, but I guess that one was a fluke. Then again 50 percent isnt that great on the FP come to think of it. Regardless, it's a lot cheaper to spend 100 modifying an eBay turbo back to fit than it is buying some Japanese exhaust. I'm don't know why he is so against welding if he wants to save money. I think you can get and entire system on eBay for under 100.

Apex N1. I have installed several. Fit like a glove.

Yea they fit nice but they are way out of the OPs budget as he said in his original post.

The only "ebay" exhaust I installed on my spyder fit just fine. I bought a megan downpipe and a 3" ebay cat back. This was when it was still FWD. It all lined up decent and bolted together with little to no cussing!

OP with buying a cheap exhaust you kind of are getting the luck of the draw as you can see just by the replies in here. You "could" get a nice fitting one like me or you "could" have tons of troubles with multiple exhausts like Justin. You get what you pay for.

I think the point is that even if you have to modify it it is simple and inexpensive even in the worst scenario.

Another option is to buy an 02 housing and take your car to an exhaust shop and have them build the rest of the system. It would still be cheap and u could choose your muffler style.

I bought an ebay cat-back years ago that fit like crap. Some of the hangers and flanges were off, and the exhaust rubbed in some spots and made the muffler point downward..... Anyway, I got another one cheap locally last year, and it fit just fine. Basically with an ebay cat-back exhaust you're gonna get something that costs a little more than $100 that may or may not require modification. Add the cost of the downpipe, you're looking at a little more than $200. The alternative is spending more than $500 for a name-brand cat-back alone that will fit almost perfectly, and you'll still need to buy a downpipe.

SIM's downpipes eliminate the cat as well. They also offer one with an o2 eliminater. I have one on order myself. I'm hoping it'll work nice with my srs cat back.

He didn't put the price in his original post. I believe it is in his 2nd post, in which he stated he didn't want to spend $500.

I have 3 of them in my garage right now, and I didn't pay $500 for any of them. a Full turbo back apex n1 can be had for far less than $500.

DON'T buy an o2 eliminator downpipe. Nothing like pulling your alternator and half the turbo off the car every time you need to drop the downpipe. :ohdamn:

Exhaust System
Not an option here. Only the test pipe eliminates the cat.

The DP's you mention are for 2g only. You find them here:
Eclipse Talon 2G 95-99 GSX Downpipe 3" Stainless

Note the OP has a 1g...

My setup following my method was as follows:
$70 for new 3" SS DP
$200 for used cat back Thermal RD exhaust (3" SS)
Free 3" cat delete salvaged.clamped from old exhaust mild steel setup.

Estimated $50-$70 to weld a 3" section + flange in SS to the pipes.

To OP... If you want a quality bolt-on setup, you better have $300-$350 realistically budgeted, and that's on the low end. (or be really lucky).

Craigslist is your friend. Wait (stalk cl) a few months and just keep oem for now is my best advice.

I bought a downpipe. Took it to a small muffler shop in town. They put the downpipe on and bent a new 3" exhaust all the way back for 224.00 including a Magnaflow muffler.

Regards
Greg

???? What? The alternator? Why do you say that? I know plenty of people running an o2 housing delete and it all comes off without much fuss?
You're obviously missing something.

o2 Eliminator = eliminates the o2 housing, so downpipe bolts directly to the turbo. Great if you're the kind of person who likes removing the turbo every time you drop your oil pan. Why have the convenience of a 2-bolt flange at both ends when you can pull half the car apart just to remove your transfer case?

Those pieces of shit have as much purpose and functionality as a lead balloon.

Humm..... Indont have to remove my turbo or anything. Down pipe is directly on my hx40 vbanded. Dont habe to remove anything but down pipe no turbo removal what so ever or anything else for that matter so i don't see how it would be as complicated as your making it sound, lonbf as the down pipe makes a 120* bend from turbine housing down should be good. Vband is key

I dont see why you would ever have to remove your turbo if you wanted to drop the down pipe unless it was welded to the turbine housing.

Then you've obviously never owned a DSM with an o2 Eliminator downpipe and tried everything in your power to get all four o2 housing flange bolts out without removing either the alternator or turbo to get it done.
