No fourth gear after tranny install

Just installed a used trans, new clutch PP, disk, and flywheel. Also did all the shifter bushings (Cable bushings and shifter plate). Shift cables were off after the install which seemed a bit weird because it was also a transmission from a 92. But I just adjusted the cables to spec.

Took her out for a test drive yesterday and it was great until I shifted into 3rd gear when I noticed there was no third gear, so I shifted to fourth and there was no fourth either (wtf). Still have 1, 2, 5, R.

Got it home and double checked the cables, disconnected them, double checked again and they were perfect.. Then started it up and now I have third gear but no fourth still. All I get is a quick grinding noise and then it sounds like it pops out, but my shifter doesn't pop out.

So then I removed the poppet plugs with the detents in them and cleaned them all off, the center one is for the 3rd-4th throw I'm pretty sure. And still nothing...

I've messed around with it since yesterday and most of today and tried different things like disconnecting all the cables, putting it in fourth with the lever on the trans, and starting it with the clutch in, and I got it to go into fourth a couple times, so I know its there. Its actually gone in about 5 or 6 times just doing random things. Theres not really one certain thing that makes it work it's just random.

This is my last resort, to ask you guys for help and any ideas will be much appreciated.

Kind of sounds like the shift fork is worn or you have loose bearings on the input shaft. I'd say adjust the cables, but that would only need to be done if you were having problems with 2nd, 4th and reverse.

Ya, I've adjusted the cables, manually put the lever in fourth, and like I said, It has gone into gear a few times... That's kinda what is pissing me off, I've got it in so I feel like I can make it work and I don't really wanna except that it's internal. Really don't wanna drop it out again. Just wanna drive it, it's been so long....

I have the same issue. Not to thread jack, but since it is the same issue. I hope you wouldn't mind.
I just bought the car. I was told that the car sat for six years. I can get into fourth is I try repeatedly, but mostly I get a brief minimal grind, and it kicks out. My shifter does kick out as well tho. Any ideas?

When I do get into fourth. It runs flawlessly.

Did you open this transmission up and look at it first? It kind of sounds like a worn, floppy fork and a blunted synchro. Maybe the input shaft isn't shimmed right, or the bearings are shot. Do you know anything of its history?

No, I havent opened it up. I want to try skate bearings and see where that gets me. I have 100k on the clock. Id be surprised if the fork is worn. Its all stock

Why dont you just unhook the cables and try to engage fourth by hand, although it sounds to be an internal problem.
