I recently had a problem where the TCU was in limp mode. I discovered the previous owner failed to color match the solenoid wire colors. After fixing that, I took it for a test drive and it shifted.

Now there’s a new problem. From 0-60 it only shifts once. I think it’s stuck in 3rd-4th gear. When I put it in “L” or “2” it just acts like it’s in drive and doesn’t go in 1st or 2nd and still shifts between the 2 gears. It also shifts really hard. I’m assuming because it’s at such a low speed/rom and it’s not meant for that: I’m going to check the resistance on the “A” and “B” solenoids at the plug and see what I come up with. I’m also going to wire up my own toggle switches for “A” and “B” solenoids to see what that does for me.

Any other ideas for things I should check or look at? Thanks

Check fluid level and condition in the trans itself. Might just drop the pan while you're there and check the magnets and filter for metal/forbidden glitter. Certainly won't hurt. It shifting between two gears weirds me out. Usually that pisses the TCU off and forces it back into limp mode.

Edit: When you're shifting with the toggle switches, keep the TCU unplugged. Trust me.

Also: to save you some time, shift pattern is this.

Gear Solenoid A/Solenoid B
1st Gear: ON/ON
2nd Gear: OFF/ON
3rd Gear: OFF/OFF
OD/4th: ON/OFF

I forget which color is for which solenoid, but you'll quickly find out. First is both toggle switches on...from there it will be really evident which solenoid is which, because if you try to go from 1st to 4th, it'll kick you into neutral immediately until you let off the gas. Lol.

Alright. I hooked up the toggle switches and it still only has 3rd and 4th gear. Would this mean that maybe my shift solenoid is bad?

Third is both solenoids off and 4th is solenoid A on and B off so yeah. Your solenoid B is either blocked with junk from the VB or bad. Check resistance on it or just drop the pan and pull the VB. it’s super easy.

I would drop the pan and check but I don’t have a filter or gasket for it currently. I’m going to borrow a fancy scan tool and see if it reads the tcu and tells me anything

I mean, you can always just RTV it. But you shouldn’t drive it with only two gears anyway as it’s really not good for the trans to keep slipping like that, even if nothing else is damaged.

Well, I decided to flip flop the solenoids and I now have first and second gear. No 3rd and 4th. What is strange this time is that if I don’t have the toggle switches the tcu goes to limp mode. I found the verdict. It’s a bad solenoid. Does anywhere have any new ones or do I have to go used?
