Well, I guess since I get a few newbie posts, I thought I'd ask for some help, and I've searched other topics and couldn't find much help...I'm getting no boost, I'll get it up to 0psi on the stock gauge and maybe 1psi past but other than that I'm getting notta..I've checked all the hoses and even about to do a boost leak test..I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem and how you guys got it fixed..

when i was looking into new turbos and such, i was reading that the 16g was a factory upgrade and bolts right on no problems (someone please correct me if i am wrong). all of those gaskets can be ordered as a "turbo gasket set" . if there is nothing wrong with your exhaust manifold, i see no reasonable explanation in getting a new one unless you want to make your motor pretty :) or if you want to upgrade to a bigger turbo in which case i believe you will need some adaptors.

I think the 16's and Evo turbos big or small bolt right on, it says "direct factory replacement" so I would think they would bolt right on? ...Looking them up on the vendor sites though some say direct replacement for stock TD05H and some say direct replacement for Td04h, so I'm still not sure..Hopefully someone can clear it up for me

There are four air seals from the head to the downpipe, and there are two oil seals that should be replaced every time the oil return line is unbolted. The four seals are: 1) exhaust manifold gasket - between the head and the exhaust manifold; 2) exhaust gas inlet hole gasket - between the exhaust manifold and the turbine housing inlet (the one you have pictured); 3) exhaust outlet fitting gasket - between the turbine housing and the O2 housing; and 4) exhaust pipe gasket - between the O2 housing and the downpipe.

There are two oil seals that should be replaced every time the oil return line is unbolted, along with the four bolts (and crush washers accompanying the lower two of the bolts). The two oil seals are for the turbine housing to return line interface and for the return line to oil pan interface.

First generation exhaust manifolds have a tendency to crack. Second generation turbo manifolds are direct replacements and are "beefier", meaning they are not known to crack. That would be one reason to replace it. A popular modification is porting or buying an already ported 2G manifold.

A 16g (big, small, or Evo III) is a direct factory replacement for a first generation DSM turbo in that it bolts up directly to the manifold. There were two different possibilities of a turbocharger on a 1G car. Which one depended on the original transmission. All manual transmission 1G cars came with a 14b turbo with a TD05H turbocharger housing. All automatic transmission 1G cars came with a 13g turbo with a TD04H turbocharger housing.

If you are looking to replace a 14b, you should be able to reuse the oil and coolant feed and return lines. For the 13g, I cannot say.

Thanks man, you told me exactly what I needed, thanks for the help...I've found one gasket set but its by Fel Pro and it looks like it has everything I need, only problem is they don't look like the best material compared to some other ones I've seen...only problem is the other good quality tough looking ones I've found don't come in a kit..either way thanks a bunch for the help

IIRC, the TD04H 13g has a smaller sized bolt for oil & coolant lines thus u'll need a 16g with complete coolant & oil lines for a direct replacement. 14b lines would be reuseable as per above as it is the same TD05 family.

Just about any site vender (JNZ, MAP, STM, Extreme PSI, etc) can get you all the proper exhaust gaskets. I recommend JNZ tuning though. Here is their list of DSM exhaust gaskets. Anything you don't see there they will have in there OEM page. Sometimes its easier just to call up Paul (215) 997-6850 and tell him what you want and he will hook you up. I have never had a bad experience with this site.

Did you find a deal on a 14b yet? I bought one from the classifieds a few months ago. They can be had for about $100 shipped with zero shaft play, you just have to look. When I was looking there were plenty to choose from.

Hope this helps!

Things could have changed since I bought my 16g, but when I was shopping around the 14b's were costing more than the 16g's. Save yourself the hassle of having to upgrade the same part twice and just go with a 16g variant. You won't regret it, and if you have a boost controller of any sort, it's not too much for your car.

What's the direction of the car? Are you going for big HP? Quick spool? High Psi? Gas mileage? These are things you'll need to know before your purchase. Only because some need minor mods prior to install.
