ok i been lurking here for a while and learning some stuff about the 4g63 motor and was wondering if you guys could help me out.....i am assisting one of my friends in getting a talon tsi awd and was wondering if you can point out some things i should be looking for to make sure this car is worthy to purchase....for the price point is a great deal but i just want some mechanical advise of things to look for other than the obvious....im going friday with him to trade his corolla in for the talon tsi.....and before i get flamed and told to look at faq's i already have.....thanks in advance for all your help

edit: sorry i forgot to mention its an auto

Maintenance receipts, the condition of the turbo, and a compression test. Take it to a trusted mechanic and have him inspect it also.

On a side note isn't new used car an oxymoron? And you might want to edit that signature before it gets edited for you. :thumb:

Signature Rules
The signature area should only be used for a small photo of your DSM and your name. That's it. If it's anything more than that, your signature will be removed or edited - and you may even have your account terminated for not following the rules. We may suspend the signature feature if we feel the need, and may even remove all signatures if too many people disregard these simple rules.

Only ONE non-animated photo of your DSM is allowed - no other vehicle photos should be posted unless you DO NOT own a DSM. In that case only, we will allow a small photo of your primary vehicle. Dimensions of your photo must be no larger than 250 pixels wide and 250 pixels tall. The filesize cannot exceed 50k. Your sig photo may contain text, but should not contain URLs, domain names, or business contact info as part of the graphic.

Absolutely NO text is allowed other than your first and/or last name - period. No other text will be allowed. Our site sponsors are the exception - they will be allowed to post their shop name if they choose. There should be no URL's, domain names, addresses, or phone numbers, etc.

The only links that will be allowed are those pointing to a specific event in our Event Forums to help promote that event. No other links are to be posted.

If your signature is removed by the Moderating Team, then you probably didn't adhere to this policy. Do not attempt to challenge the removal or attack the moderators for removing your sig - both in your new signature or anywhere else in the forums. We feel the rules are very simple and make sense for everyone. Don't get banned over something as stupid as a signature file, please.

and besides the breaking of rules.. why do we care about some celica part? if it kicks in at 6k rpm when are you shifting? LOL "...for truly high performance" LOL.

are you buying a 1st gen or 2nd gen that way we can sort of pinpoint certain areas each gen is known for when it comes to faults.

sorry about the sig...ill change it...and thats actually whats in my car....i believe its a 2nd gen motor and testing it would be tough considering we are travelling almost 100 miles to the dealer that has it

well the first thing i would do.. compression test.. and check for signs of crankwalk especially.

I'm developing a list of things to check for when I check out a 2G Talon TSI at the end of this week. I've been talking with the guy who has the car for a month or two now and had a much longer list, but since then I've forgot some little specifics but here's the list I have thus far.

Compression Test
Condition of turbo, intercooler, and pipes
Strut Tower Rust
Turbo Leak Test
Signs of Crankwalk
Limited Slip Differential (stick should be in driver’s side door jam, or on rear diff)
Transfer Case
Sunroof Leaks
Timing Belt

thanks for your help guys....i appreciate the things to look for.....and can some one point out a link that describes crankwalk or explain it to me....i am a newbie to the turbo world and dsm world....im an N/A toyota guy myself.....

I dont have an exact link but I'm sure its all over this site. Even just search google for it.

Basically all it is, is the crank seperating from the block...some people say its caused by a poor oiling systems, others claim theres a different cause.

Any engine can 'walk', but DSMs are common to do so. Sometimes the 'walk' is unnoticeable but its still over the manufacturers standards, making it considered crankwalk

thanks for the great link....learned allot from it but i have a question.....most of these cars have manual transmissions and the car being purchased is an auto....is this less frequent on the auto's?

don't bump your threads, ever. for any reason.
yes it is less frequent on autos, but not unheard of. As a whole crankwalk is possible for any vehicle just more frequent for some dsms. check it, or make the dealer check it and show you and show you it is within spec, then forget about it.
