New Strange clicking Noise when car is Rolling. What could it be?

I purchased my car a few months back with a blown motor. Turns out that the original owner hacked a lot of repairs on this thing. He bought expensive quality parts but then didn't installing things right.

I just got done installing the new motor. I put in a new ACT 2900 clutch and a stock flywheel (just resurfaced).

I've put about 20 miles on the new motor and its running great aside from a ton of leak issues that I think I've finally worked out.

Tonight I took the car down the street and all of this sudden it started making a loud click, click, click, click noise when rolling. I pulled over right away and shut off the engine. I let it roll down the hill and it was making the noise in neutral when rolling. So I drove real slow home.

I jacked up the front end and spun the tires in neutral and don't hear the noise.

My initial thought was something was touching the axle or an axle came loose. Neither are the case. Nothing is toughing any on the drive chain.

I supposedly have a TRE stage 2 tranny and it shifts smooth. no grinding

Could this be: 1) an issue inside the tranny 2) a problem with the transfer case?

I'm not really sure where to start with troubleshooting.

Might be a bad inner CV joint.

Wonder what that will cost to repair.

I was hoping it will be an easy fix but its not looking that way. More parts to order and waiting. Only thing is that it does it in neutral while rolling and not just under load. So maybe its something more simple? Let me know if anyone has an idea on additional troubleshooting.

It's coming from either the transmission or transfer case. I jacked up all 4 and it only does it when the back tires spin. Hope I don't have to pull the tranny. Don't know what it could be.

It's for sure in the tranny. Pulled the t-case and nothing appears wrong. Something is clanking loud in the tranny. Jacked up all 4 and ran it in 1st gear. Starting to hate this car!!!! .

I just don't see how that sound could be coming from something in the tranny. It would be grinding if a gear broke or something.

The problem is coming from the passenger side front. It would make sense to be a bad CV but it only does it when the rear tires spin. It happens in neutral or in gear. If I spin the front tires then the clank clank clank doesn't happen.

Is that possible its a CV joint? Does anybody have help?

I'm stumped and don't want to start pulling the tranny if I don't have to.

It shouldn't be the t case, usually that produces a distinct whining noise... You'd probably know if it was that. It could be the cv joint, but then again if you hear it inside or near the tranny it may be a synchro or a piece of something clanking around inside that only gets picked up at certain times. Do you have cross drilled rotors? Also is anything obviously loose in the front suspension or move around further than it should?

Any boots torn on any axle? I'd take the vehicle to a front end shop to check the axles for wear since they're pretty well experienced with suspensions and now all the tricks of the trade.

If you got AWD, check the "U" joints at the end of the driveshaft. Raise the rear end of the vehicle and push up on the drive shaft where the "U" joint is at by the front and rear end differential. If you got some vertical play in that joint, best get it fixed pronto. For if that joint gives out on you, you're definitely toast in all directions.

It is AWD. I couldn't find anything loose in the front end and do not have cross drilled rotors. No torn boots on the axle either. I just had them out when I rebuilt the motor and everything looked good.

I was wondering if it could have been something loose inside the tranny. I thought about draining the tranny fluid to see if there is any metallic pieces in there. Still I would think it would grind.

Something for sure broke in the tranny. Drained the fluid and it was full of metal flakes. I'll be taking it to Jacks on Tuesday. He's about 30 minutes from me
