on my bro's 1990 tsi 6bolt. i recently rebuilt the motor and installed 2g pistons and rings. when i started the car it puffed out a lot of smoke but i though that was normal to flush out the oil i put in each cylinder to prime the car. but as i drive it it smokes at idle on and off and when i let off or engage the throttle. also at a constant speed it will not smoke but at times let out a puff. could this be the rings not set yet or is this another issue such as improperly installed rings, or the head was not machined properly at the machine shop?? i did a compression test for fun just to see what it gave me (although with new rings it is suggestedyou wait) i got 125 on a cold motor for each clyinder. any thoughts??

i also checked the spark plugs and their isn't any oil deposits on them??
 
I can not say for sure but I know that it took a good 70 to 100 miles for every thing like gaskets, rings, bearings and all that to seat if you don't have that many miles on it yet give it a few see if it goes away and if not then start checking for other possible problems. I just finished my 6bolt rebuild and I had smoke for a little while, not bad though. and only for 10 minutes and then it was gone. How many miles are on it so far? Did you do the compression test with an open throttle? 125 seems really low, even for a cold motor with very little miles on it. At 100 miles I had 164's across the board on a hot motor with throttle open. Try a compression test on a hot motor, make sure the throttle is wide open and pull the MPI fuse. See what kind of numbers you get.
