I have 98 gst with a big 16g that is about a little over a month old. I recently put a turbo back exhaust on (no cat) test pipe. Soon as I started the car i noticed white smoke immediately and a bad smell, which did not smoke at all before the new exhaust. I also noticed that im running pretty lean at idle, like around 18 and 14-15 while driving and around 11 in boost which im fine with. I did use a used down pipe that they said could have a little oil in it but ive been driving it for about 4 day a lot and it hasnt stopped smoking at all. I will say it dont smoke when cold but when you drive it for a little bit and it sits for a little it will start to roll out and if you give gas it will puff out, but does not smoke goin down the road far as i can tell. The car is stock except for new turbo, fmic and exhaust, and i do have AFR. im just trying to figure out why its smoking and why its lean at idle. If anyone has any idea whats going on please let me know. Thank you

it was idling fine with that turbo on the stock exhaust, and im on no tune.

Stock exhaust is 2in and your probably running a 3in pipe. thus, less backpressure with a bigger turbo flowing more air at idle, you might run a little lean on a stock tune. and where is your wideband placement on the downpipe? what's your FPR set at? You try cleaning your MAF? you do a boost leak test yet too?

Can you legitimately clean a karmen style MAF? All the cleaners Ive seen have warnings about use with that MAF style.

If you had a cat on before, its possible this was being burnt up before hitting the atmosphere and its always been there, just not seen. Also, brand new exhausts smoke, smell, shift around ect for the first 500 or so miles. I always recheck everything after the first heat cycle and after 500 miles. If it doesnt clear up in that amount of time, Id assume you then have am issue, unless your fogging the streets, then you have an issue now :)

Yeah, idk about cleaning the MAF, but I'm thinking about get a high flow cat to see if that helps any and idk how long it would take to get oil out the downpipe I'm using cause they said it had a little in there but I'm not fogging up the street haha just smokes at idle. Thanks for the response!

New exhaust systems normally have an oil based rust inhibitor sprayed on them at the factory.

I see you say you have driven it 4 days, but how far each day?

You may need to jump on the interstate and heat the entire exhaust system up to burn all the oil out of it. If that is the issue.

If it is not, then time for the basic tests and checks.

Well I drive about 30 min to school I take the highway long enough to heat it up but I only have drive 1 time this week so far and the first day I got it I drive for about 2 hours, and then just like regular little trips too.

You need a good 10-15 miles on the hwy to heat the exhaust up to the point you can not touch the tail pipe.

You can't be serious about the flowing more air at idle statement....

Well which test?? I have a coolant pressure tester but not a leak down tester
