Ok, I have a high mileage '91 Talon and want to build a motor to swap in, or buy one already built. I've posted ads on sites and have gotten feedback and also found motors on this site. I'm mainly just looking for a short block. Is it smart to buy one off someone else or should i just buy one from a shop?

Well, if the person is reputable and has receipts and servcie records for the engine that wouldn't be a problem at all. With a shop you are getting a warranty and a bit mroe guarantee, but it will cost a bit more most likely. This is a matter of how much you want to spend or save. Either way it can turn out good or bad.

If you can find a running motor to buy, that would be good. That way you could do a compression check and leak down test, and make sure it doesn't smoke. When you start talking "built" motors, most shops aren't going to waranty them past break-in anyway. Every place I've ever talked to told me they didn't warant race motors except for assembly error. You can also save a ton buying used.

If you dont know much about engines you are most likely never going to feel completely comfortable buying an engine off someone that just has it laying around. If you know what you are looking at than it will be quite easy to determine whether or not the engine is in decent shape.
If you plan on rebuilding it anyways than make sure you get one with a good crank and block.
Its best to figure out exactly what you want to do before buying anything.
I myself have spent many a months deciding on where I really want to go with a project, and I always decide to do something diferent than what I had initially wanted to do.
Good luck with the build. :thumb:

yea if i got a stock block I'd be puttin rods and pistons in. My dad knows a lot about cars and all but even he is still questionable on buying a used motor. I would think taking it to a machine shop would probably be smart right?

Make sure you go to a reputable machine shop. I've been screwed before. Just because it's a machine shop, it doesn't mean that they know DSMs. I've had someone put bearing in wrong "twice" (wrong clearance) and the bearings spun on me. Best to order from reputable company that has experience. I've learned my lesson from backyard mechanics and people that thing they know what they're doing. Remember, you get what you pay for! Do it right the first time and spend the little extra for peace of mind. Most shops won't warranty motors if the motor is not built "stock."

By the way, you're not too far from me and I have a reputable friend near Mantua, NJ. that builds DSMs on a regular basis. He can build the motor or put one in for you at a good price if referred. Let me know if you're interested. This also goes for everyone else out there.
