I just replaced head gasket and everything is running fairly good, but I'm noticing Sludge (oil in coolant). Did the head gasket not seat right? I double checked it was flat when I put head in before torquing. (And followed toque procedure from 2gnt). Does the gasket need time to form/seal?

Machine shop hot tanked pressure tested and decked it. I was told to use an MLS gasket afterwards.

Your block is most likely un even, should of used a composite hg. Why did you change the hg? You need to have your block and head decked to a certain finish for a mls.

I changed the HG because original was blown.

He has a 420a which uses an mls gasket oem. There aren't too many composite head gaskets available for these engines.

Head was definitely milled, and the shop the work was done at is a well know performance shop in the area. The work was done properly

So you watched them surface the head and verified that it wasn't done with a belt surfacer.

They do offer them but as you said very limited and not really the greatest. Everyone has said us MLS

He only mills. Also the finish was a milled finish

You can also machine it wrong with a mill. If it has lines in it from the tool than it isn't flat enough. It should look almost shiny with very little to no tool marks.

It was that's why I'm so confused. Checked everything. Ill just year down and check gasket? Or should I just try re torquing now after running

He might be able to torque it down a little more like 5-10 lbs, what do you think bogus? , are you on stock head studs? I don't know about 420a motors are the head bolts tty?

TTY = Torque To Yield, or pull them once and junk them

Let the car sit until it is cold. Start it up, and tell us if the cooling system pressurizes instantly. Grab the upper radiator hose, and see if it is hard to squeeze. You could run a compression test also, looking for a low cylinder. A CLT is an option as well if you have the tools. These tests will check to see if compression is leaking into the cooling system.

Edit: Sorry OP, just noticed you are inquiring about a 420a. The top comments/tests still apply, just disregard what I wrote below this. I'll look around and see how the head on the 420A is feed. I'll leave what I wrote below though, as it may help some 4G63 guys having your issue. Still wan't someone to confirm that there is only the one pressurized oil port between the head and block on a 4G63.

Dale, Tuners, correct me if I'm wrong, but the only pressurized oil port between the block and head is the oil feed port correct? If you had a leak, that's where it would likely be. Aside from pressurizing the cooling system with a tester, I don't know a way you could check to see if there is a leak there. I can't imagine one of the drain ports would be leaking into the cooling system between the head and block?

Did you change the coolant after the HG job? Might want to try that and see if the sludge comes back. Might just be from the previous gasket failing

Ill flush again and see. Good idea
