New guy, looking to buy a DSM

Hello everyone, and first I would like to say I am new to the DSM community after many domestic V8 RWD builds. I love the power potential of the 4g63 and AWD. Been racing and building as a hobby for about 12 years now and looking forward to the new build.

I am looking for a car if anyone reading this has one let me know. Looking for a 92-96 eagle talon tsi or eclipse gsx AWD. I am in Iraq and will be back in January. I have the cash to buy (saved over here _) and am willing to travel to pick one up.

Anyway, just introducing myself and look forward to talking to you all in the future.

Just curious why 92-96 there are 2 different body styles there? The changed bodies in 95. But welcome and good luck on your adventure. There are the classifieds forum on this site, you will not be able to post being a rookie, but you can PM the seller if interusted. Or check the local auto trader. Since the cars are getting a little old you can pick them up for pretty cheap now. Only hard part is finding one in good condition. Most that are still used as an average joes daily are beat and or been modified wrong so they are going to require a bit of TLC when you first get one. First thing to do is check the timing belt. And check with the prev owner about last timing belt replacement and what excatly was replaced (reciepts are nice). I helped a friend get a DSM the other day and the owner said, you this shop did the timing belt and he showed us the reciept, that was all the did, no B belt, tensioners, pullets ect, were not replaced and I doubt if they were checked. After that a good tune up and intinal repairs and the thing should be good to go.

PS thanks for serving in the military and preserving our freedom while protecting us. What branch? I am a jarhead, and use to be stationed in Camp LeJeune NC, did my 8 years and am now out.

Yeah, i know two different body styles. i like both the 1g and 2g, just dont like the early ones with the flip up headlights. Not my style. I was a Marine for seven years and got hurt so I got out. Now Im in the Army as a Scout (like a USMC recon platoon). Thanks for the response. I appreciate the advise. I was a pro mechanic before coming back in so I will be fine but thanks for the tips on what to look for. I will enjoy doing the work (still have all my tools even though the wife hates the giant tool box in the garage ) Thanks again.

If you can find one, get an AWD with a 6-bolt motor swap. 7-bolt motor's are known to have crankwalk depending on the milage. Unless you plan on doing a full motor build then I see nothing wrong with using a 7-bolt crank.

agian, welcome to the wonderful dsm world. i agree with the last person, try and find a awd, course you know what the difference is between them, and try to get a 6 bolt. they are a little heavier than the 7 bolt but the internals are built stronger and no crank walk. very rare find for a good price and good cond. but its possible. i dont know how much your looking to spend but if its under 5 or 6 k, which you probably have more than that, then its going to be hard. but its all up to you bro. agian, thanks for serving our country and protecting us from those damn irags. later, landon

I did a lot of research on what I wanted, I know all about the crankwalk issue as well as the other pros and cons associated. Thanks for the tip though. I can deal with either seven or six bolt motor although a six bolt is the better choice. Just need the right basis for my project. I will get rid of the factory ECU and run Megasquirt so no problems with fuel cut or MAF-T or anything else. Thanks for the info.
