Winnipeg,
I apologize but I am new.
I have read the FAQ forums, but many of them confuse me.

I just got a 97 eagle talon tsi awd turbo. Everything is more or less stock. It's got quite a few things to fix on it like the struts are going, and the timing belt... and the engine has about 200 000kms.... and the turbo doesn't make a pshhh sound, it's more of a strange roar.

I'm a girl.
I've only started learning about cars since deciding to get this one. (So only about a week and a half.) I absolutely love my car however, and I want to learn more and make my baby into a beautiful machine... money allowing of course :)
I eventually want to learn how to fix my own car, but it will take time as I'm new to all this. If it's too difficult I'll probably take it to the shop, but I want to personally experience fixing the car cause it's like bonding time. It makes it more my own. I don't know what I can do by myself and what I'll need help with.

My question is, does it mater what kind of struts and timing belt I put on?
What should I do about the engine since it has 200 000 kms? Should I be looking into getting a newer used one? Can I install a non turbo one in and add a turbo kit?
Any idea what might be wrong with teh turbo?

97-98 talons are nice, I want one myself, did you happen to get thos enice white 17" rims that come with them? The timing belt you should always use is stock, oem mitsubishi, you can find it on www.slowboyracing.com and the suspension wouldnt hurt if you gave it an upgrade, which you can also find on the slowboy website, for the engine, do not buy non-turbo blocks, a used one in good condition or you may want to consider swapping in a 6-bolt, nice talkin to ya..toots

Thank you for the advice!
I have no idea what the rims are... I'm really new at all this.
What is a 6 bolt??
The mechanics have told me that this car is a money pit! They said something abuot there not being any room to move your hands... that it's labour intensive. I love it anyway though... So I plan to invest some money, time and love into it. Is it really hard to fix cars? How much basic stuff can I do since I'm just learning? Probably will need to get someone to fix the struts eh?
I paid $4500 CDN for it. It's a 97 eagle talon TSI AWD turbo with leather seats! There's rust though.... I'm wondering if the least i can do is sand it down. The rust on the trunk however is bad in one part. You can push it in :(
I want to make this talon look as new as I can. I love the idea of a fixer upper cause then it's all mine... I don't know if that makes sense.

Hello! Since you are new to this, I would strongly recommend that you purchase a FACTORY shop manual. Go to my profile, do a Thread search, and you can find the post I did.

Struts are not hard to change, but bolts are probalby rusty. For starters on your rust, go buy a can of "rust ender", or whatever it is called. You can find it in the auto section of almost any store. It sprays real thin, but would help stop the "cancer". Maybe you can find a good used "hatch" somewhere, and exchange it.

Timing belts etc, always use OEM, or good quality. My mechanic put German parts in mine, since he is a VW mechanic. Never had a problem with anything he has done, so it all good stuff. Just try to avoid the Autozones, and common parts places for timing stuff.

If you have any questions, just pm me or email me, referance the profile. Where you at in Canada?? Good luck!! ;)

I dont think they are harder to fix then any other cars. A 6bolt is a motor form a 1990-mid 1992 turbo dsm.
I rarely argue such broad points, but I have busted knuckles from a belt swap whereas I could sit in the engine bay of my IH Scout 800.

Why would I go to an older model?
I just figured all cars are hard to fix, so what difference does it make for me? :)

That cheap for a 97 talon. About the rust if it's surface rust u can sand it down if it's not surface rust then i would recommend a new hatch from a local scrap yard.

The 6bolt engine is notoriously stronger.

I will take this opprtunity to point you to the Search feature as well. We have 36000ish members, so chances are alot of your questions have been asked at least once. :)

Welcome.

Some are harder than others. But, what we have here is a Japanese sports car. Therefore, it going to cost more $ to fix. Unless you find a good honest mechanic. Not very knowledgeable on the 97’s, I am focusing on my 91, LOL. :D

Hi, i only have a 93 but i will try to help as mush as i can,
For starters here are some links to places with DSM info, it's local club so it might work out.

www.mbdsm.org

Here is the local MB club yahoo DSM link : http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/mbdsm/

And the Club Canada DSM link : www.ca.dsm.org

Sounds like a good platform for a great car, have fun.

i wouldnt change my own timing belt just yet if i was you, i dont know if you were planning on it or not.. its rather complicated if you just started learning about cars, bring it to a professional. also, welcome to the site. 2g talon tsi awd? nice choice :thumb:

Girl, Your name was?.. Sorry didn't catch it, the reason people say to do a 6-bolt swap is because the 7-bolt motors are known for crankwalking, every motor can crankwalk but the 7-bolt found in the 2g dsms is prone to it, but shit 124k miles and it hasn't crankwalked, I doubt it will, Some dsms have sen more than the miles on your car, so if you had a compression check done on the motor to see if its within spec, I believe 2gs are somewhere in the area of 140-185? Better check in on that with someone who has a 2g manual, mine is a 1g. but a compression check can give you a heads up if your engine may be bad or not. :thumb:

Ohh always remember to turbo time your car, which means after you drive it, hard or soft, let it stay on for a minute when you park it, reason is , the turbo spins really fast and if you just shut off the car, the oil is not going to recirculate, neither is the coolant, and your turbo is both water cooled and oil cooled, and if the car get shut off and the turbo is spinning at excessive speeds, that means that your turbo will end up in the garbage if it doesn't get its lube.

My name is Wai.
There are 200 000 kms on it! It's a lot of kms! And it's an automatic... I tried to learn standard driving, but I didn't like it at all.
Thank you for the advice about the parking thing. I'll keep it in mind.
Everyone has been very helpful. I've already learned alot!
If anyone wants, add me as [email protected], or [email protected].
I really want to chat with people on real time :)

Here it goes:

Since this is your first car, first mechanic experience I'd recomend geting the struts and timing belt changed by a mechanic. In my opinion the first thing that YOU should do on the car by yourself is change the oil, it's easy, painless, a good learning experience, etc. etc. As for the rust that is showing up on your car. Rust is like car cancer. It can spread and destroy body panels. Depending on the condition of the engine and the car in general, I'd see about breaking the rusty portions out, sanding all the rust off of and out of them and then having a shop weld in replacement sheetmetal and paint it to match. Regarding the engine having 200k km, (non metric folk that is only about a 125k miles) it depends on the condition of the engine, if you plan on working on your car get yourself a compression tester (and a shop manual) if the compression is bad it may mean you're in for a rebuild at which point you might consider an engine swap to the 6 bolt mentioned earlier, or just a replacement engine. If the compression results test good and the car is running well (no smoke, no leaks, no warning lights, no problems at all) then don't worry about the milage of the engine and be happy you have a car in great mechanical condition, as long as it starts in good condition and you properly maintain it and give it lots of tlc it will run for a very long time.

I bought my talon used with about 12k miles (19k km) on it...it now has 130k miles (209k km) and is still in perfect condition mechanically. It has never left me stranded, it has never had more than a few hours of downtime that it needed for basic maintenance or repairs. Moral of the story is treat it right and it will treat you right. Get yourself a haynes or chilton manual for it at your local auto parts store, read the vfaq, read the posts by members here, if you want to modify your car and make it go faster, look into the tuning guides also found on this site. If you have questions don't hesitate to ask us....oh yeah and welcome to club ;)

Rims are the part that the tire's mounted on and they have lugnuts that connect them to the wheel hub. You're going to want to find someone who knows how to work on cars, so they can help you. The most frustrating thing is trying to follow directions, but not understanding something or just not knowing what to do.

hahahah - i find it funny that no one says " SEARCH ! " or does any attacks because the thread starter is a female :D
welcome to the bored - adding the words girl/female/help in any post will deff get quick replys :D

an oversight on my part..heh heh. The search function is your friend, becuase a lot of the questions you're likely to have about the car have been answered dozens of times before. If you don't find what you're looking for on the search or still have questions you'll generally find us more helpful knowing that you've already taken the time to search out the question.

See post 11. I keyed on the search function a while back.

I find it funny you didn't read the thread all the way through before replying. OMG ;)

Ok, so it's true! I knew that if I told people I'm a girl, :p I'd get some answers at least! hehe. However, it IS true. I am a girl. And if you're wondering what I look like, ask Laserdad91! I sent him my picture. OMG
