New EVO 16g Turbo

OK I bought a new 16g evo turbo from buschur racing. I wicked excited about getting this thing since I've been running around with almost no boost or oil as the old turbo has had it. Any way I whip the thing out of the package and inspect it meticulously since I can't install it till Sunday I'll stare at it Well in all my stareing I noticed that the wasgate arm is bent. Now I'm thinking WTF I just payed 500 bucks for this thing and buschur made a big deal about shipping on their site being so great they couldn't tell me how much it was. So I disconnected the actuator and bent the arm (the little nub not the actuator arm) back to its original angle. The flapper moves freely now. But when I reconnect the actuator I can't push it the wastegate out with my finger. And when I pull on the actuator arm I can barely grip it enough to move it at all.

Are new actuators supposed to be this strong?

And do other people have similar problems with stuff from buschur coming damaged? I wanted to buy their catback exhaust but not if this kind of thing is normal.

I'm running an otherwise stock system should I be safe from boost creep or should I order up that exhaust ASAP?

The wastegate actuator is supposed to be REALLY strong, strong enough that you should have lots of trouble moving it with just your hand. Buy a hand pump from autozone and test to see if the wastegate actuator works (moves at 10 psi). Chances are that it was fine and now you have inadvertently destroyed it =)

I think you just messed up you brand new turbo. I bet you had a hard time bending that flap, now imagine the packaging that it came in doing the same thing. Leave well enough alone and you should be fine.

I will add my $.02 about Buschur Racing.

Chances are they didn't sell you a damaged turbo. They do a very nice job of packaging their products. The reason they don't tell you the price for shipping is that they leave that for the people that ship it. Truthfully, I don't think they know what it's going to be. You shouldn't be able to move a new actuator very easily at all. A cat back would be nice, but that depends on how far you want to take this car. You are going to want to go turbo back, the stock downpipe sucks. You are going to choke that turbo alot with the stock exhaust. The exhaust size argument will go on and on. I have a 2.5" from the turbo back and that works for me. You could try a 3", but if you're not going to go bigger than a 16g a 2.5" will be sufficient. Plus with a 3", without porting the o2 housing might give you problems with boost creep.

Your right about the cost 9d2tsi I was just mad about it coming damaged. And the actuator arm is supposed to be bent I knew that. The tiny arm on the flapper was bent into the housing and as such the flapper opened about an 1/8th of an inch. Is someone here trying to convince me that the flapper should only open that far I've seen porting VFAQs were they show the area being ported so that it will open up a full 90 degrees. Bending the arm on the flapper now allows it to move freely when the actuator is disconnected.

I am glad you fixed it though. I just wanted to say that I've never had a bad experience with them. Anything is possible. Have you installed it yet? If you haven't you are going to want to plug all of those open holes up so nothing gets into your turbo. That would suck.

If you get into your swap and have any questions let me know, I have done two of those turbos so far and they are actually really nice turbos for the cash. They are what should have came in our cars in the first place.

Just a piece of advice, when you drain all of the fluids (oil/coolant) just do yourself a favor and pull the whole radiator. This will give you alot of extra room and you won't have to worry about damaging the tubes/fins with an errant drop of a ratchet.

How much play does your turbo have? Mine has some =( Its also making a clicking noise from the middle of the turbo when i spin the turbine.

I heard that the turbo play is normal when there is no oil in the turbo, but the clicking noise is worrying me.

Possibly the the fins scraping the sides of the housing. Look in there and see if there's any scrapes on the inside walls.

Ya mine was bent a little there too but i'm not worried about that. And mine clicks in the middle a little if you spin it. There's all sorts of seals and stuff that just sit on the spindle so I figure it's one of those doing something to make the noise. Or maybe the heat shield on the exhaust side

Oh mine doesn't have any play though...I'll be putting mine in on Sunday hopefully so I'll let you know how things go.

It should be normal because there is no oil in the turbo.

Hm, mine was bent there a little too..so I lifted it a tad by prying with a screw driver... Also sanded the turbine housing because the wastegate flapper arm would hit the outside turbine housing if I pushed down on it and tried t close it.

The rod actually lifts the wastegate arm away from the turbine housing so im not sure if I did more harm then good, because I creep to atleast 20 psi after installing it..
