New crank or new engine?

I spun a rod bearing twice on the same crank. There is metal shavings in the oil pan.
Now I don't know whether to invest in a new crank or new engine?

Option 1 (New Crank) $400
When you removie the crank I assume you have to retime, which i don't know how to do but im sure i can search it.
And I don't know how to replace an oil pump which I assume would also be a good idea.
Also since the bearing spun the piston itself could be scratched right? Or does it not matter?

Option 2 (New Engine) $1200
I can do an engine swap but the price is horrid opposed to a new crank.
I'm not very bad with cars but I'm not perfect.

What is your advice to me?
 
I vote for a used long block. Less of a headache. Or if money is tight find a good running short block and send the head to the machine to get rebuilt & clean of the metal shaving.
 
Change the pump maybe do a bse, water pump all timing components just do a fresh rebuild i just did mine.

Yeah see I work long hours and go to school. As much as I would love to learn how to rebuild an entire engine right now I just don't have the time. My plan would be to do crank, and oil pump that's it. Would I get away with it or be much more secure with a short-block? I am tight on money, i got about 700 total for this.
 
You can't remove the crank without at least removing the transmission. If you spun a rod bearing, the rod which spun will also need to come out and either be reconditioned or replaced. Otherwise you risk spinning the same bearing again. Once you pull the piston/rod, the cylinder should be honed and new rings on the piston. And to top it all off, you now have metal shavings in every oil galley in the block so you have to flush the engine somehow. Seems like a lot of work to avoid a rebuild...

So your options are rebuilding the engine completely, throw in a good engine, or spend days and hundreds of dollars just to have a ticking time bomb for an engine.
 
You'll drop nearly $1200 on rebuilding the engine back to spec especially if you don't know how to do it (labor is quite expensive). First off what are your goals for the car? And what's your budget? And do you plan on doing this all yourself?
 
a short block for 300? sign me up! where?

And yeah see i assumed replacing the crank would be a pain in my ass. I want a reliable car so that is out of the picture.

I am no mechanic but i do try and do everything on my own.

Short block seems like the best option. Where do i find one? I live in Tucson and ive seen maybe 20 dsms here so please dont say craigslist. ill google while i wait for anyone to reply.
 
Just get a used short block and call it a day. That way you will have a spare block as well. You could easily be looking at half of your 700 just in labor alone. Than theirs the cleaning of your block, polishing or turning your crank, new rod and main bearings, and a new rod. As for the oil pump, if your not gonna push the motor to the extreme, just check tge clearances between the two gears. If their good than clean it real good and call it a day. Spend your money on a timing set and waterpump. But like you were saying you really dont have the time so just get w used long block.....

Where do i get a shortblock?
 
Call around to local junkyards, keep a eye on the classifieds on here they tend to go pretty quick. I recently traded my 5 spoke chrome gst wheels for a rebuilt one that spun a bs bearing. You just need to keep a eye out for them, they really are starting to become harder and harder to find. Both 6&7 bolt.
