I was wondering which is cheaper A new turbo or an engine. I priced both and found a turbo kit for 2799.00 I had to add 1000 for the IC and I found engine for 1800+300 for tranny+ 300 for shipping... They are both closely priced at 2799 and 2400 so I guess it comes down to labor cause This is not something I want to do myself. Which do u think would be cheaper.

well selling teh car is out of the question cause i just got it... for a gr8 deal so i don't mind shelling out a little extra money on it. it still has less then 100k miles so i think the swap or turbo would be a good project.

What year/engine is in your car at this moment?

It would depend on which one you have already if it was my money.

Selling it is out of the question, but ripping the engine out in favor of a swap is not?

That said you could pick up a JDM 6bolt with a turbo for less than 2k.

just pulling the motor and dropping in a new one (that bolts right in) will cost you around $1000.00

or at least that is what a shop here would charge

Got your own shop? Definitly put a new engine in it preferably and remand it will give you the least risk of buyin a used engine. Or rebuild one yourself used engines usually have been sittin for a long time (not good) they will leak and do all sorts of wierd things. Or just buy a TURBO AWD to replace the one you got. Your money be smart... And Have fun w/ ur DSM, cause if you don't love it, it definitly will not love you... Get my drift. THESE ARE PROBLEM CARS, but the funnest to work on !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love fixin these DSM's there is always a new challenge. :dsm:

I guess I might not turbo it then... its a 95 eagle talon esi. all stock.... Hmmm... I guess my question now for educational purposes only where could I find a good engine and tranny??? And what engine should i get. would a 95 fwd TSI engine fit??? And how much would a least a 2g DSM cost... I'm willing to travel so if its not too far I might just do that... :( But i'm basically confused about the whole thing though... No one here has done an engine swap or turboed an ESI??

check out the N/T forums for more information regarding turbo'ing your car, it can be done, but you'll only be able to run about 4-5 PSi (I'm guessing) before you start having problems. To build your motor, it would probably be about 1500 bucks, then the turbo kit from hahn would be another 2 grand or so, for the fabrication to put a 6 bolt 4g63 (the engine you would find in a turbo car of DSM's) would probably cost around 1500 bucks, unless you have some friends, and the engine itself, including turbo/tranny, would probably cost another 1-2 grand if you want a good one. just right there, you're looking at a lot of money. Check out the non-turbo forums, and decide what YOU want to do, it's YOUR car.

That being said, my personal opinion is that you should sell it for a profit and buy an AWD or FWD Turbo DSM.

that is exactly what i did.... all in all.. selling and buying turbo is the easiest way to go.. i still have my non turbo but i am selling it.. i am now a proud owner of a turbo talon awd.. its simply the most economical way to have a decently fast dsm.

If you search past threads on this site, you'll learn that people HAVE done an engine/drivetrain swap on ESIs as well as turbocharged them. Unfortunately, what's been discovered is that it's more cost-effective and much less of a headache (plus better potential) to sell your N/A car and buy a turbocharged version.
