i know this is'nt a bolt on question but im new to this sight and im not sure where to post it. but lately i can kinda feel my tranni slipping i know its a about to take a dump on me so i was wondering if there is any claim to the neon transmission being better in a 2gnt i know the gear ratios are different

but is there any truth to this claim i went to the local junkyard and for some reason they will charge me a 100 less LOL i didn't think he knew they where compatible but i can get the neon transmission for 150 so i really need some input on this situation

should i try and find another gs tranni or should i go with the neon

auto or 5 speed? i hear they are similar in the auto version but in the 5 speed version its a cable clutch unlike the dsm hydraulic clutch.

i also have read you would have to change the bell housing but a 420a expert would have to confirm or deny what i said just dont take what i said as yes or no.

i also found this link give it a look - http://www.2gnt.com/index.php?d=3.55

You're correct. The manual transmissions are nearly identical. Some Neon transmissions used cable style clutches, whereas your transmission has a hydraulic clutch. Just swap the bellhousings to make the Neon transmission compatible.

To the OP:

Please try a little harder to use better spelling and grammar. One period isn't sufficient punctuation for two paragraphs. We don't ask you to be perfect, but good spelling and grammar helps us understand your questions and ultimately help you better.

95-99 (1gn) neons were all cable driven clutches. I also believe that 2000 was. 01 and up got a hydraluic setup. They are all NV-350s; with the exception of the SRT4. As far as automatics, the neon got the a413; the dsm got the a604 if its a Chrysler transmission. Those are different. The 604 is electronically controlled whereas the a413 is not.

Well if i wanted to use a neon transmission. Would i want the final drive to be 3.55 or 3.95. And is the hydraulic clutch or the cable clutch better or just a personal preference.

There is 3.95 - do you mean 3.94? It all depends on what you want out of the car and what it is used for.

The question about the cable/hydraulic clutch is irrelevant. The 2G system is hydraulic. You are not going to convert it to a cable system with any amount of ease.

3.94 gear would be better for non-turbo builds. 3.55 better for turbo; this was you have longer gears to get up in the rpm band for spool. You *might* see a slight difference in gas mileage with the taller gear, as well.

The 3.94 geared trans's are a bit harder to come across since they were used in the ACR, r/t and EARLY 1995 DOHC sport coupes. The rest of them got the 3.55 one.

strangely enough my turbo 420a had the stock (i thought it was 3.84 not 3.94) final gear, and my n/a 420a had the 3.55 final gear mod.

how it turns out to be IN REAL LIFE:
stock trans: at 55 mph in 5th gear = 2.5k rpms
3.55 trans: at 55 mph in 5th gear = 2k rpms

you would only do the 3.55 gear mod in a n/a car if you wanted (slightly) better mpg's
you would do it in a turbo car for obvious reasons.

Hi I'm in the process of building a motor for my 99 GS I got I wrecked 95 eagle talon esi I for parts to convert mine to stick as well reading here about the ratios of the 5spd trans I would like to find out if 2001-2002 neon trans would bolt right up into my gs? Since I will be running minimum 15psi of boost to start with I would like to change the gear ratios some what.

For what its worth I'm at 2k at 70 MPH on the interstate. I can't remember what year I have but I defy have a 3.55 final drive, I had to swap the bell housings because the neon trans I got was a cable clutch and not hydro.

Yes that's why I'm looking into bolting up a 2001 or 2002 since they are already hydrolic but if its only the bell housing that would need to be swapped I might get an older one will see what my local junkyard has to offer :)

No they will bolt right up. The only thing you MIGHT have to change out, is the shift arms (depending on the length and throw vs yours). And the 2001 and 2002 is stronger in the case and some gears than the first gen's.

Short answer:
Yes, the GS and RS are the same transmission wise. And many neon trannys will work...
