Williamsburg,
OK I posted this in the drivetrain area and got no answer. So I hope that someone can help me in here. Now all i really need to know is can I weld my Wheel bearing braket back to the motor or will I be risking the chance of messing something up? It has been welded to the block before but I just want to make sure its safe to do it again.

Why it was welded I have no clue. And how it broke, someone probally didnt know what the hell they were doing. But now I am stuck trying to figure out what to do to fix it.Man this sucks.

Yes it does.

Are the thread bosses still clear and clean in the block? How about the passthroughs in the bracket?

As wild as it seems I CAN understand why someone welded that bracket on in the past - You have to be someone like me - who has gotten under there & drilled out these particular wrung off bolts with the motor in car to appreciate WHY someone would weld it. I'm still not reccommending it - but I can FULLY appreciate why they did it...

I find it hard to believe the holes aren't in EVERY block - just a few have wrung off bolts in them...

I was going to say, I've seen bolts that have sheared off of the bracket/block before. Is it possible they welded over the bolts so they aren't visible anymore.? Regardless, It is a tight space back there, and it won't be fun working to fix. But, it is something that has to be fixed.

Thank god for a tap and dye set.I found the holes but you could barely see them.It look as if they broke off and someone grinded them down and welded over the holes.Well they only welded over one hole i got the screw out of the hole, one but cant on the other. So will one bolt work or will I need both? ANd does anyone know the size of the bolt that goes there?I feel some what realived now.I also made a little vid of what they did and I will post it so you all my see what I am talking about.

Well It was welded to the block. Now the weld broke and broke my CV Axsel.I replaced the axsel and discovered the problem with the braket. Now I searched high and low for the holes and none were to be found. The car will only go like a foot forward and backwards. Do to the bracket being free.

Ok, I've now got a grasp on the problem. 1990 factory manual Sections 2-22, 2-23, 2-24, 2-25 cover the repair of the wear items associated with the "center bearing bracket". In effect this is not a thrust load but an axial load for the bearings are acting as a center rest.

Would it make sense to remove the intake manifold to gain access rather than working in the confined space from underneath?

If the C/B bracket is welded then access to bearings and the inner shaft will be impossible to service or repair without breaking the welds. It would be better to swivel the "bracket" out of the way and with the intake manifold removed grind the existing welds off with a 5" disk grinder. Then extract the broken bolt(s) so it can be re-mounted correctly. If the threads are damaged then using a Keen-Cert repair the threads so factory bolts can be used again.

Buck used a right angle drill which may or may not be required if the manifold is removed??

Comments??

Cheers,
GTM

I am taking the car to the dealership to get the other bolt taken out.But will it be ok with just one bolt in it?

I would say no for there is a pretty good lever arm from the bearing bracket to the mount. There is a lot of mass so every time you go over a bump it will want pivot downward and loosen the single bolt. See if they will give you a quote on removing the broken bolt. Were you able to get replacment parts from the wrecking yard?

Cheers,
GTM

Ya I got new bolts from the dealership. Now how do I go about using the tap and die set for this one.I can see it but how do I approach it to remove it? I can make out the holewere it is suppose to go.So should try it or leave it alone?
