Car ran great till I touched it go figure.

I just changed the plugs, wires, pcv valve, valve cover gasket, cut the top part of the air can off and replaced the paper filter with a k and n cone. Now it starts ok but as soon as it idles back down to normal its sputtering a little and almost stalls, it also smells pretty bad. It doesnt seem to skip higher up in the rpms but it seems to bog a little. I triple checked the firing/spark plug wire orientation and its right. I also put the old plugs and wires back on and get the same thing. Please help, im thinking its a boost leak somewhere???

Also I when I checked the plugs they looked good, not coated with fuel or anything.

Sounds like a leak. Recheck the connection to the pcv valve. Other thing that comes to mind is that you could have gaped the spark plugs wrong.

I triple checked the mas connector, even took it back off and plugged it back in. Didn't touch the honeycombs.
I put the old sparkers back in and no change.
I checked the connection to the pcv, everything looked ok.

That almost sounds like the timing is off a little bit.
Maybe your fuel pump is bad too.

A buddy whos a mechanic just did the timing belt last week, but the car ran fine up until I did the things I mentioned above.

Just triple or quadruple check your work. The things you did to the car should not change how it idles. You have to take off the intake pipe to change the air filter and there are at least two fresh-air lines behind the MAS. One for the PCV, fuel purge, and something else that I dont know. Its really easy to miss things.

Ok I will, one thing that worries me though is that maybe the timing is off a tooth. I noticed after the t belt job it seemed to hit a brick wall up top past 5k powerwise but that could have been because the air filter was pretty nasty but the idle was ok not lopey like it is now. Then I did the stuff I did and all of a sudden its screwed up so it must be something I did.

my car sorta does the same thing if your check engine light is on your storing a code in your ecu. you can test it with a multi meter on pins 1 and 12 for first gen is top left and bottom right but my car has rough idle till warm. replaced pcv plugs wires, rotor, fuel filter it started when when it almost stalled when clutch was depressed or put in N. but if these symptoms sound similar chechk for vacume leaks in your intake your o2 sensor and your mass airflow sensor which unfortunatly is and expensive piece but i bet it is emission related. but some times the motor in the iac gets lazy and doesnt open when the engine detects it is still in open loop or the period of time it takes for your ecu to finish booting very low memory in thos LOL.

Ive pretty much done all the tune up stuff except the fuel filter but either way it ran great this morning so it I guess it must be something I did. Not getting a CEL.

It was the timing, it skipped two teeth and wasn't tensioned correctly. Luckily I noticed and it didn't bend anything. Thanks for all the input.:hellyeah:

i waS GONNA SAY TIMING CAUSE I HAD SOME DUMB ASS CHANGE MY WATER PUMP 6 YEARS AGO BEFORE MORE PROBS HAPPENED WHICH LEAD TO THE CAR SITTING FOR 4YRS BUT ONCE I CAME UP WITH CASH AFTER REPLACING ALL THE BASICS MYSELF I PAYED A SHOP TO FIG IT OUT FOR ME
BUT BACK TO THE PROB MY CAR RAN FINE FOR A WHILE B4 THE ROUGH IDLE STARTED THATS Y IT WAS HARD TO FIG OUT AND LAST THING YOU WANT TO DO AS AN NOOB IS TRY AND FIX THE TIMIING :banghead:
