We are doing a 1g swap in a 98 gsx. I am ordering the motor from tigerjapan. I already have every bolt on and a 16gsmall. I've run my 16g small for a season at 9psi while I fixed all the crap the previous owner rigged. I just want opinions on good deals. A private dsm builder who I use for advice and stuff I cannot do Is selling a Slow boys racing 50 trim for 300. It was ran one season at 20psi and has no shaftplay. He already gave me the ported o2 for free in the past and now has decided to sell this 50trim. I will be running external wastegate(not sure if its even an option to do internal with this turbo) But I cannot find the regular price of this turbo anywhere. Also If I buy the turbo for 350 I'll be getting a dejon intake with a k&n filter. Are these turbos better than 16g bigs ?

I dont plan to always have this but atleast a season or two. I am putting 272s in my 6bolt atleast and most likely building it for 600whp and only using 400whp til I can afford appropriate transmission and suspension upgrades.

Anyways he hasnt steered me wrong but I have read bad and good things. Is it worth a shot for 300?

Any idea when it was bought new from SBR? They changed manufacturers by era- first were actual Garrett T04E turbos modified to use a DSM bolt-on turbine housing, the next were Turbonetics-built, and the last run were made by Kinetic Motorsport. Quality seemed to go down a little with every change in manufacturer.

Not sure , he is old school. I know the hks bov is ancient that was on the manifold he had with it. Its befor my hks ssq and mine they dont make anymore.

Its just what he recomended. Then redo gaskets seals cams atleast. I gues he orders from them all the time and for 1500 they are really clean , not beat up and have a turbo still on and they are the best to build off of. I just normally listen to him since he has sever 600whp plus dsms and a vr4

So you spend $1500 plus the parts/labor (gaskets, etc) and what do you have?

A used motor with new gaskets.

Maybe ok for a low power commuter, but as base for a performance project it's a waste of money

can you buy just motor shells? for cheap? and how are crate motors? I probably will do pistons and rods , valves , cams, delete kit, I would rather build it once and not use the power until my tranny. My 7bolt is a fresh build with 11k on it so its almost an even swap for the 6bolt that will be ripped apart. I guess you can do 800ish hp on a stock crank so I probably wont spend 6-800bucks on that

That technical aspect I have no idea. He just recommended that with any chance of crank walk isn't worth the money throwing it in my motor. I mean is it that bad my car runs like its brand new now that I got all the wiring settled

Anyways whoever said all slowboys is garbage did u actually own one. Seems like everyone talks up what they bought and disrespects what thay never have bought or tried. A lot of companies sell their product under someones name. And the casted slowboys manifold is identical to the hks one I saw at the shop. So how about about back to my original question for 300$ is it worth it ingood condition. It even looks new. Or should I wait til evo 3 bigs are back for six hundred at extremepsi.com

hate to say this but the guy you get your "advice" from either isn't all that DSM smart or doesn't like you very much.......

There are few nice dsms in ohio. And bushur is conceeded nobody likes his attitude. So its either bushur or the private around here

Its up in the air though maybe his view point is something you haven't experienced. I am sure when you build six to ten cars a year you run into problems and similarities you wouldn't see workin on your car at home. Ill just have to do it my way if shit blows up then oh we'll I still have one of the nicest shells in ohio

If I order a motor with 20-40k well all your sensors also drop 80k miles if I am just throwing away 7bolt guts why not even swap for a six bolt with 20k that's clean as hell and throw its guts away. 1500 bucks for labor to rip it out, rip down new one and put whatever pistons rods and cams in doesn't seem too crazy. And nothing like a warrenty and free delete kit and free lifters. Not to mention depending on the package I choose I can get a tranny for aroun the same price and use my older one to send to shep and still have a tranny and two turbos to sell to make up for some of the labor

You're not really looking for opinions or advice.

You just want people to make you feel good about the choice you've already made.

I don't think that's going to happen.

Find someone else to get your advice from

Agreed.

Dude do not pay $1500 for a junkyard motor. If there is nothing wrong with your 7bolt then just use that. There are countless high horsepower 7bolts. Don't buy into the "crankwalk" hype.

As far as Slowboy, yeah the service is slow and communication is practically non existent. Some have had issues with quality of work performed by them as well but I don't see how an off the shelf turbo from them that the customer actually has received and ran will be bad. If the dude has it and all checks out, you should buy it.

My original 97 156k mile 7bolt has seen quite a few 44lb/min pulls and still going strong.:thumb:

I do appreciate it guys. After days of research I think I will build my 7bolt head. BC 272 kit from extremepsi.com for 550$ that has cams, springs, and retainers. Use my 50trim that I did buy for now and just buy dsm link. I just have a problem , I was going to do ecuflash or dsm link but my ecu is metal, I thought It was suppose to be plastic? When I wired apexi in I didnt see any cables tapped into so I dont think the coils are switched :hmm: . Any input anyone?

If it does walk then I will to a hybrid 6built bottom and keep my semi-built top. for the resell value it isnt worth it.

I'll roll the dice and for the money its worth as a whole i'd rather walk that bi*** and use it as a garden rock , plant some flowers in the block , LOL

My friend owned a slowboy 50trim and he was pushing like 45-55psi we never had a problem with it and we ran it for a few months hundreds of pulls and never had a problem. I dont know how long they last because he upgraded so now it just sits with the rest of his smaller turbos.....
