Need help! Won't pass smog

I have a 90 eclipse gs turbo i bought it with a broken timing belt and bent valves, i got all of that fixed and the car runs great but i went to get it smogged and it wont pass because it is passing to much fuel. They gave me a print out that says 631 hc ppm and 9.99 co% and they told me its probably more but the meter only goes up up to 9.99. Like i said the car runs great as far as i know all it has is a catback exhaust and k&n filter other than that i believe it is all stock but not 100% sure. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

High HC's means timing and fuel mixture isn't too good.

Plugged or weak PCV system are the usual culprit on high HC readings.

Check timing and vacuum leaks.

Do an oil change and get the thing super hot before you do the sniff test..(is the T-stat at 195, for if its colder, your system is in a open loop with more fuel being shoved in to try to heat the block up to what the ECU is designed to run at and more fuel burned adds to the HC numbers).


High CO is the o2 sensor not doing it's thing either - not telling the ECU to meter A/F ratios where they need to be. They can get lazy and still not set off a CEL since the light comes on only when the o2 sensor isn't communicating with the ECU.

Catch cans help since it's trapping the HC's from being burnt off.

I had rotten HC numbers - like 2200ppm on the HC test - to easily fail my first test. Found tonnage of vacuum leaks, dirty oil and timing was off. Did the oil change, replaced PCV valve, got the timing back in specs with new plugs, replaced the o2 sensor, drove it on the freeway to get the thing super hot and I passed with 178ppm on my HC test. My CO was well within specs..on a 21yr old cat.

Also try changing to stock spark plugs so your car run hotter and drive the hell out of it before you go to smog shop. I used to live in CA and I did that to my car, passed the second time with flying color.

I also did the same change the spark plugs,new air filter & change the oil and got on it when i drove it.i end up passing the second time too

O2 sensor was bad, got it replaced but still running too rich. I went to a shop and they did a quick check on the injectors and the resistance was about 3.5 on all 4 and the guy said it should be higher than that but then he called another tech and he said it should be about 2. Who is right? Should i swap injectors?

Are you using stock 450 blue tops, or something else?

If some thing else, that's the problem since more fuel is going in than it should.
