So I just bought a 91 talon tsi awd a week ago and have drove it a little, but recently I wanted to try and mess around with the old school apexi safc and get it to run a little better not really knowing what im doing a whole lot but thought it was a good idea. Now my car is not running right in idle every time I rev it in idle it bogs down and dies. Also when it's sitting in idle it almost dies too? So I was checking to see if anyone would know how to adjust all 5 knobs for a good tune. It's got 720 cc injectors and I plan on running my boost at 18 lbs. I also have the aem uego wideband and it's showing that it's runing real lean now. So if anyone has expericne with the old school apexi safc please help!

I am running 3" GM Maf-t with 660s tuning with SAFC II, I run lean at idle, and from there it runs stoich. When you have larger injectors than stock, they have larger deadtimes at idle, causing it to run a lot leaner. I dont fully understand it, but thats how it is.

Hm, sorry about that didn't see it listed in your profile so I thought you were on the stock MAF. I assume you have a logger?

I'm not too familiar with the old style Apexi's so I can't offer much help. But I do see you have an E-prom ECU. ECMlink V3 is a good possible remedy that you might want to look into in the future.

I once had an issue were I was running extremely lean at idle only, and it turned out to be my front 02 sensor. Just a thought.

Hmm ok actually I am running the crap stock maf forgot to list it. Gonna switch to the GM and dsmlink eventualy. I do not have a data loger either. No the bov is not recirculated so thats prob why i got poor idle i shouldnt have even ask that question but would that cause the car to die when i rev it at a decent rpm in idle not being recirculated? Im newer to these cars so i dont know a whole lot. I really need to figure out how to mess with afc tho.

The old safc does not offer enough correction to run 720's. Remove them and run stock injectors. If not you will mix a ton of fuel with your oil, and probably spin a bearing. Change the oil before driving the car, after you switch injectors.

Not what i wanted to hear ha.Could i just by the newer apexi afc instead of replacing the injectors for now? Cause id like to run more boost.

That would be silly when you could sell yours and for the price of buying another you could buy a good used dsmlink v2 setup.

There is a chip in the car im not sure if it will help with running the afc I have now. All the guy said I bought it from was "it just over rides the computer to let it know it has bigger injectors running off of 91 and thats about it I would recomend gettin Link off top and have it tuned". So wouldn't I be ok still? I'll post a pic later of the chip.

Take a picture of what you are talking about.

Here is the chip

That is a eprom chip. You already have a socketed eprom. I would highly consider selling your safc and buying a used version of dsmlink v2. You can probably get one for 150-200 dollars. That chip should theoretically make the car pretty close with those injectors and require minimal tuning with the safc to get it close. Dsmlink just offers so much more.

Ok so is safe to be driving my car still? I will def be buying a dsmlink here soon once i get the money.

You might just uninstall the safc and see what it does. It's hard to do much with the safc unless you have a wideband or a datalogger.

Were the fuel ratio's decent before you installed the safc? Is it the first style with the 5 kbobs, or is the safcI with the digital display and 4 buttons on the right.

I bought the car with everything installed already. It's the first style with 5 knobs.

That chip is burnt for a 2g maf according to the sticker Im guessing ..... Didnt you say you have a stock 1g maf?

Also what are the safc settings now?

Do you have a logger? No need to go out an by link just need to get an Idea what the Ecu is doing so you can make the proper adjustments you could save a bit of a headache by rerouting your bov to start with

Thats what i thought when i first saw the pic i guess not tho but yes the car has the 1g maf still. I have the dials all set to 0 right now but my battery is shot fml so i cant see how my car is running as of right now. I have the aem uego wideband and thats all i got to tweek it with and of course the safc. Ya i need to recirculate for sure. Mainly i wanna if its ok to be driving my car now.

Pick up a logger or a logger cable to hook up to a laptop otherwise its all pretty much close to a shot in the dark.....

A log would tell us a lot more
