Whats up guys? The names Phil, I have a couple ?s. I have been looking on this site for a couple days now but cant seem to find what im looking for, im ewbuilding a 6 bolt for my 92 Talon, and i was goin to do the 1g rods with 2g pistons, can i used any 1g rod and 2g piston? or do i have to go with the (91) 1g and the (95) 2g pistons? b.c when i was reading the fourms they were talkin about 1g big rods, are thos all 1gs? or is there only some 1gs that have them? Sorry if this is a stupid ? just couldnt find the info and im about to start buyin the stuff and i dont want to end up buyin the wrong stuff

Thanks
-Phil

90-92.5 1g rods from a turbo or non turbo and 95-99 2g turbo only pistons.u have to have the 2g pistons cut to fit the 1g rods. the top bearing needs to be enlarged my 1mm.

Wrong, the 1G RODS have to be machined to fit the pistons. They need to be bored to a 22mm to accept the pin. These guys do it:

EDIT - OP, imo i would just go with a nice forged set up like eagle rods and ross pistons...Really it only costs like 760 bucks and you get EVERYTHING you need. As opposed to running used rods and used pistons(god only knows what dsm noob beat on them)...It really isnt that much more.

^yup

I can haaz teh rep points :thumb:!!

In all seriousness im a noob but i been researching my ass off for a GOOD and COMPLETE set up. Forged is the way to go, either save money by using USED ENGINE INTERNALS(not smart) or pay damn near the same price for factory parts. Good luck!

Not to bust anyone's bubble, but machining 6bolt rods to fit 2g pistons is chump change. He's not going to be also machining the big end to put those 6bolt rods into the 2g motor. Considering he already has the rods, why would he sink nearly $1K into forged internals, when a good set of used 2g pistons and machining his current 6bolt rods wouldbe about $200?????

--2g pistons have the CR that most forged piston companies offer standard. Same performance upgrade.
--2g pistons have better spacing between the ringlands for more durability over the stock 1g pistons. A bit of a durability upgrade.
--Weaker 1g pistons with 6bolt rods can do 600whp daily driven, as proven on several setup. Will he ever need more than 6bolt rods and better 2g pistons with his evo3 16g? Or even if he buys a turbo that flows 10lb/min more?
--A used piston is heat cycled and proven to meet the proper bore clearance and wristpin clearance. If it's not broken, it's not broken. Don't buy a set that's been chewed up or cracked . . . of course!

Spoolin_TSI, you have 6bolt rods in your 1992 motor. VERY VERY few 1992s have 7bolt motors. Never even seen one in the 10 years I've been messing with the 4g63. Yes, all 1g rods have to be machined to fit the 2g piston, but it's a waste to fit 2g pistons on 1g 7bolt rods (1993-1994, VERY few 1992), unless you just want the compression increase alone. Regardless, you have a 6bolt motor in your car and you need to cut the little end of the rod only, as pictured in the below chart. Don't resize the big end because that is for putting the better 6bolt rod onto the 2g crank.

Here's how to machine 1g rods to accomodate 2g pistons. . .

I disagree, re using stock internal parts isnt my prefered choice of path. I see your point but for 500 more you get NEW!! And STRONGER parts.

Thanks guys for all the info, i asked b.c i was on here looking at some kits like that and it said they were 91 rods and 95 pistons, so i didnt know if thos are the motors that you had to look for to make up the set up that i want, and i was thinking about building a 6 bolt bottom end but i have 2 of them laying around, i was just goin to rebuild the stock one, and then built the shit out of my 2nd one,

Thanks

Totally understandable. Just wondering how much weaker is used :) ? How much stronger than what the 16g can output do you need? The 6bolt records are all with very used shortblocks :)

90-92.5 1g rods from a turbo or non turbo [I'll add, 2.0L not 1.8L] and 95-99 2g turbo only pistons.u have to have the 2g pistons cut to fit the 1g rods. the top bearing needs to be enlarged my 1mm.

^^^He gave you the correct answer first.

Yeah, i didnt even think about that, ik i have read something on this fourm about it but i guess i never thought about it, Where could i get a set? and how much would thoughs run me?

Thanks man, ill lookin into thos, I found this set up from a buddy of mine, there already to go and hes letting them go for $125 should i go for it? b.c to mean it seems like a good deal

Thanks
