I need Help picking a rebuild kit for a 4g63t 7 bolt. I'm new to this, I know a lot about American muscle. But not so much on tuners. I would like to get about 400-450 HP.

there are ebay kits but i have never tried it but if i were you i would get a 6 bolt and do regular maintence , but if you rebuild the 7 bolt oem parts , came up to 1000 for me but i got a brand new crank

when you say rebuild kit what exactly are you looking for? crank, pistons, rods or gaskets, bearings and headstuds?

Whats the difference between the 7 and 6 bolt? It has a 130k on the engine, its already out so whatever I need to do to achieve that much horsepower I will do. If its within reason of course. I paid 350 for the whole car and its a 96 GSX.

well first off nice job getting a super good deal on the car :thumb:

read this link for the difference

and why is the engine out?? rod knock? skipped timing?

Really the options are almost limitless. The real limiting factors are your HP goals that you stated and how much you want to spend. The main thing is to buy once and buy right. Remember good things are not cheap and cheap things are not good.

Now the real question is are you going to be happy with a 400-450hp build for the life time of that car? Or will you maybe want to have a little more in the future?

If all you are ever going to want is a 400-450 you can just get a stock rebuild. But as with most of us we always want MOARRRR. Lol I put a forged setup in mind for 1800 bucks. started out thinking i only wanted 450, now im wanting more like 550-600. Glad I put in a forged setup to begin with.

He said he dropped a valve and it pitted the piston. It didn't dent the wall though. So he took the engine out and was going to rebuild it but never got around to it.

I guess depending on how badly the pistons are damaged you could just put a new head on it and go from there. try looking on craigslist or local forums and try to find a 6bolt long block.

The 6-bolt is the early 1g engine. It's stronger than the 7-bolt all-around and can be swapped into a 2g fairly easily. More info on all of this can be found by searching this site or VFAQ.com.

For a complete rebuild "kit", the closest you'll get is aftermarket rod/piston/bearing combo's. Otherwise you'll have to source the parts individually and reuse what you can (rods, crank, etc). But 400-450hp is a stretch for the stock 7-bolt IMO. Some have pushed them farther, but most fail long before then. Bare minimum I would suggest for a 7-bolt is forged rods and pistons along with ARP head studs. However, a 6-bolt could handle that much power bone stock. So whether you want to build the 7-bolt or swap in a 6-bolt is up to you. I would read up on both before deciding.

Here's a good place to buy engine internals. Everything you need is on this page:
STM: 90-99 DSM 4G63 ENGINE COMPONENTS

I'm also not sure if your aware, but you'll need a handful of supporting mods. A tuning system, more fuel, bigger turbo, stronger clutch, etc etc. You can take a look at the Dyno Challenge (top right under Members) and see what people are using to make that much power. But for now, this link should give you an idea of what you need.

The main difference between a 6bolt and 7 bolt is the crankshaft and internals. A 6bolt motor has thicker main and rod journals and is stronger. They have different sensors too because you have a 2nd generation 7bolt. and the head on the 7bolt does not flow as well as the one on a 6bolt.

With all that said your goals are very reachable on a "stock block". If you have the money to rebuild with forged internals go ahead and do it while you're in there. But the crank is more then enough for your goals so just a good set of pistons and rods would be a start. Then you will need a decent size turbo. 20g or bigger there. A decent FMIC and full exhaust.

You will want to upgrade the fuel pump to at least a walbaro 255hp or a 400lph.aeromotive also makes a good 340lph as an alternative. You will want some good injectors at least 950cc. AND THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WILL BE THE COMBO OF A GOOD TUNING SOFTWARE (DSMLINK OR AEM) AND A WIDEBAND AND BOOST CONTROLLER.

Once you have those things you should be able to make 400+hp reletively easily. Good luck! :thumb:

So do I need the whole engine if I went a 6 bolt? My car is also a auto, I plan on doing a swap to a 5 speed. How much are you guys thinking for cost on this?

Bro you have a long way to go before you would be thinking about doing swaps and what not. Sounds like you dented your piston.
Can you get into a 6bolt swap and all that? Sure. Is it necessary for your power goals? Um no.
Id start here. Get yourself a forged rotating assembly with main bearing cap alignment dowels.
Get Ecmlink V3
Nap some 264 cams. (or equivalent)
Upgrade your injectors to some 750cc.
There you go 400-450 HP.
As for the tranny swap. There are countless threads on here about ATM for MTM. If your planning on drag racing most people will tell you stick with the auto. if your just looking for some fun, sure you could go with the manual but you will eventually be replacing clutches. the dsm automatic tranny is SOLID. I wouldnt mess with it. throw a shift kit in it and LOVE IT.
just my $.02

I might of found a 6 bolt engine where I live. How much do they usally go for? And what do you guys think, auto or manual? Found out that my car already wired for a 1g.

Hmmm...I am still un-sure what your talking about. If you are talking about putting a 6-bolt head on a 7-bolt block....that can be done with a little effort but...why? The 7 bolt head is a better platform to build power from when you compair the 6bolt stock head to the 2g 7bolt stock head. The 2g 7 bolt head also has a small amount of more meat that you could shave out if you were looking to make more power by porting it too.

I want a 6 bolt. Is it straight drop in? How Much for a total rebuild on one? Think I should do anything to my trans?

It can directly drop in as far as I know, the only troubles you will have is connecting some of the 1g sensors to the 2g wiring harness since some of the connectors are different.

Someone already said they got a complete 6-bolt for $400 (not sure if that was with the head or not). If you want a fresh rebuilt one then you would be looking for something within the price range of rebuilt shortblocks that the vendors here sell for, around $2200. If you rebuild it yourself you could save a ton of money.

Your trans should be fine be fine as an auto, if you do a manual swap you would most likely end up with problems unless you went with something like a stage 3 shep trans.

I'm a big believer in the stock bottom end. If you are looking for affordable power, that would DEFENITELY be the way to go.. I think we can all attest for how much our bottom ends can take... LOL

If you have not done so yet, be sure to check out the Horsepower upgrade paths listed in the tech section at: Tech Guide - DSMtuners

This will provide a good idea of how much modding you will need for your goal.

Good luck!

Ok, the guy i got it from said with the way the wiringis it wwouldbe best just to use a 1g head on it. Then he started talking about a pressure plate conversion? What is that? Okay, I've been lookin at some guides on a 6 bolt swap. It doesn't look easy.
