i just got a used big16g and i herd a little noise from the exhaust wheel. it seems to be coming from the metal piece under the exhaust wheel. is this normal? you can see the gap that there is with the closeup pic. i also awanted to know if i should port the exhaust housing some more? is there any way to check if the wastegate is working properly>? does it matter how you reasemble the wastegate? thanks.

FYI, when you have the exhaust housing removed, that metal heat ring isn't secure, so it will rattle against the spinning turbine wheel. If you grab that metal ring with one hand (keeping it firmly seated againt the center section), then the turbine wheel should spin without making any noise. Both my B16G (when it was new) and my Evo16G did the same thing with the exhaust housing removed... Here is a pic of my Big16G installed in my 1G, with the exhaust housing removed (removed it to install new tubular O2 housing)...

I also ported the heck out of the exhaust housing (helps decrease spool time) & also the cold side, but that requires a cir-clip removal tool.

:talon:

yup without the exhaust housing on, the backing plate will rub the turbine blades unless you hold it against the center housing.

Did you hear the noise with the exhaust housing on, or only with it off?

All you need to do to check the wastegate is hook up a pressure pump and apply pressure to it. It should move.

..What you meant to say was vacuum (just don't apply more than 25 H/g... you could F the diaphram in the WGA)... You can test the WGA with a vacuum pump.

It actually works either way... If you use pressure, you will then have to look at the WGA's rod movement to determine that if in fact the WGA's diaphram is damaged. It is much easier to test the WGA via a vacuum pump and just watch the guage on the vac pump, to see if any air is being bled off (indicating a damaged diaphram). If it wolds vacuum indefinately, then the WGA is fine.

The method described in the Chiltons manual is to pressurize the WGA to 9 psig and see if it moves, and also to apply a vacuum to see if the diaphragm is leaking ( it should hold vacuum). The diaphragm may be okay, but if the WGA still doesn't move when pressure is applied it's no good. It may be mechanically binding.

Also make sure when you put the turbine housing back on that it is pushed all the way on, when i took my turbo off so i could port it i didnt push it on all the way and when i took the car for a ride it made a whining sound. I had to take the turbo off again. Not Fun.
