Sorry guys im new to this forum but not really new to other forums i had a ? it's kind of an emergency because im stranded so here goes. I took my car to a shop here because my timing belt had snapped due to a bad tensioner so they fix it supposedly but when i went to pick it up today it's just dying and running extremely rich. So unless my foot is on the gas it's dying. I had them adjust the idle screw but it didnt help i also tried turning the cas that to didnt affect it. I am completely confused on why this is happening but it didnt happen prior to this. I dont really have any special mods 16g supporting fuel mods and 3inch gm maf and maf translator. Any ideas guys? Sorry i made it so long im just confused.

How much vacuum are you getting at idle with your foot off the gas? Or will it not run without your foot on the gas?

belt snapped, 9 times out of 10, valves will hit pistons. You most likely have bent valves. Do a compression test.:beatentodeath:

hey sorry for the lack of info guys they took the head to the machine shop so the valves are new i checked for any major boost leakes as well. The car wont run without my foot on the gas

Do a good boost leak test and a compression test. If it has low compression, then either you pistons suffered damage too, or the new valves are not fully seating. You said it's running rich, which means either you have a boost leak (although I believe you would have found anything that would cause it to be this bad in your first test), some other air metering problem, or something is up with your fuel system. Do you have an AFPR? Might want to check your fuel rail's base pressure, as that all had to come off and could have gotten messed with. Also, make sure everything electrical-wise that had to come off got reconnected, and that the GM maf didn't get messed up during any of this. I can't find the thread right now, but from what I've read on here, the ECU will fake the MAS signal when it doesn't have one.

I'd start with checking the GM maf setup, then move to a through boost leak test, compression test, and then fuel system testing.

By any chance is your alternator good ? I remember i had a similar problem with my 1g and turned out to be my alternator was going out and the car would only stay on by giving it gas.

^ good point.
Do you know for sure it's running rich (black, soot covered plugs/black sooty exhaust, or wide band 02 readings)? If it's just dieing when you let off, then it could be a number of electrical issues. Another thing to check for would be fouled plugs. If it's running rich, they could just be fouled or incorrectly gaped.

the mechanic took the plugs out and they were jet black covered with soot. it wasnt black smoke coming out of the exhaust but it was white and smelled of fuel. He saud he wasnt sure about putting in new plugs he way worried about them fouling up again.

Also, make sure that the shop actually did the timing right and you haven't skipped a tooth. Sounds somewhat similar to when my timing was off by a tooth, ran like crap, wouldn't idle, wouldn't stay on unless you gave it gas etc.

How would one know if it was off by a tooth the shop still has it but im wondering how that would be corrected. According to the mechanic he drove it and it ran fine aside from the dying part.

When you try to line up the timing marks they'll either line up properly or they won't. If they don't line up then you've skipped timing. My car drove ok when the timing skipped, like you said before it just died at idle if you didn't give it gas.

yeah i'll have to check with them hopefully thats the only issue yeah it's like a redneck shop hopefully they understand.

i am not a great mechanic but once i left my in the garage for a long period of time it was running fine until i tried t o started , it would start but i had to leave my foot on the gas. and apparently the gas had gone bad. maybe it was cheap gas or it was too long of a time not moving. how long was your car in the shop? just a suggestion

hey guys i have a question even though he put the timing light on it and it read 8-10 could it still be off a tooth?

Make sure your alternator is in good condition because I had a similar problem and it turned out to be my alternator was junk.

Your using Premium gas right?

When I said check timing I meant the mechanical timing on the timing belt, not the ignition timing. Also, the way I've checked it has been to ground timing to 5* BTDC and then use the light. If it isn't exactly at 5* BTDC then you have an issue.
